Selected Families and Individuals

Richard Tydings [Parents] was born 1 in 1640 in All Hollow's Parish, Anne Arundel Co Md. He died 2 in 1686/1687 in Anne Arundel Co, Md. Richard married Charity about 1660.

Charity was born 1 about 1640. She died 1 before 1687. Charity married Richard Tydings about 1660.

Could have been Charity Sparrow, but this is refuted by http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/tydings.html.

Richard TYDINGS wrote his will 2 Feb. 1687. He died between 4 June 1688 when he was made an appraiser of the estate of Edward MARRIOTE. (MD Test. Proc. 14:95) and 4 July 1689 in Anne Arundel Co., MD. On 13 Feb. 1692/3 Cap. Henry HANSLAP, former sheriff of AA County showed that a commission was granted to said HANSLAP on 4 July 1689 to prove the will of Richard TYDINGS and that it was by him subscribed and proved on 13 July 1689. (MD Test. Proc. 15:9)

Richard named his son John who was under 21, his eldest daughter Charity, second daughter Elizabeth, third daughter Pretitia, and fourth daughter Mary. All four of his daughters were to receive bequests at the age of 16 or marriage. There are reports that his wife Charity was a SPARROW, but no documentation has been found for this. It has also been commonly reported that his daughter Elizabeth first married John BELT, and second John LAMB. This has been found to be incorrect.

Children of Richard TYDINGS and wife Charity: 1. Charity TYDINGS b. ca. 1675?; m.1. John JORDAIN; m.2. Michael PACQUINET; m.3. Mr. SELMON; living 1750 2. Elizabeth TYDINGS b. ca. 1677?; m. Robert CRUMP before 13 Aug. 1702; living 1719 Queen Anne's Co., MD 3. Pretiotia TYDINGS b. ca. 1679?; m. DUTTON LANE; his will 31 May 1716; she m. before 22 Jan. 1718 John BOREING; d. 2 Feb. 1734 St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore Co., MD 4. Mary TYDINGS b. ca. 1681?; m. Phillip DOWELL 11 June 1702; d. between 31 May 1716 and 26 Jan. 1733 Anne Arundel Co., MD 5. John TYDINGS b. ca. 1683?; m. Mary ELLIS 16 day, 6th month (this is NOT June), 1705

Richard's wife Charity is commonly given as the daughter of Thomas SPARROW and Elizabeth KINSEY. The only "source" offered by anyone is:

Charles Brashear and Shirley Brashear McCoy, "A Brashear(s) Family History, Vol. 1, The First Two Hundred Years of Brashears in America," (San Diego, CA: 1998).

E-mail with the author Charles BRASHEAR at brashear@mail.sdsu.edu dated 16 Nov. 1999 shows he was unable to offer any source for his inclusion of this in his book. He stated: "Here's what I have. It looks like a will record, though I don't seem to have the book and page references," and then recited the information contained in his book. It becomes apparent he had no documentation for his statement that Charity was a SPARROW. There is no will listing Richard's wife Charity as a SPARROW, or any record of Thomas SPARROW having a daughter named Charity.

One of the more important SPARROW documents is Anne Arundel Co, MD Land Records WT1: 20. This shows that Thomas SPARROW had transported himself and his wife Elizabeth, and his children Thomas and Elizabeth to MD in 1649. Thomas, son and heir of the first Thomas, received a patent on 7 Sep. 1659 for "Sparrow Rest." The deed shows Thomas, son and heir of Thomas SPARROW died, and left his son Thomas his heir.

This record shows the first Thomas SPARROW was deceased by 1659, with children Thomas (Jr.) and Elizabeth. Thomas SPARROW (Jr.) wrote his will' in 1674. (MD Cal. of Wills 1:90) and named his wife Elizabeth, son Thomas, sister Elizabeth CHAMPE, daughter Elizabeth, and brother Solomon. As his brother Solomon was not listed as having been transported in 1649, he is believed to have been born after 1649.

From the "siblings" for Charity "SPARROW" listed by Charles BRASHEAR, the Thomas SPARROW he is claiming to be her father would be the one that wrote his will in 1674. That Thomas SPARROW (Jr.) did not name a daughter Charity in his will. He did make bequests to his known siblings, and again there is no mention of a sister named Charity.

Published sources commonly state that Richard in his 1687 will, bequeathed 300 acres (unnamed) in Baltimore County to his daughters Charity and Elizabeth. Examination of his will (MD Wills 6:40, FHL microfilm 012843) shows that the actual bequest was for the 375 acre tract "Nanjomie."

On 25 June 1719 Robert CRUMP and wife Elizabeth of Queen Anne's County, MD sold to Philip THOMAS of Anne Arundel Co., MD, the aforesaid Robert CRUMP "standing legally seized in right of the said Elizabeth his wife of the moiety or half part of a tract of Land called Nanjamie" of 375 acres. (Baltimore Deeds TR#DS:47, FHL microfilm 013325) The deed stated they sold the half part (187.5 acres) that was the right of his wife Elizabeth. Therefore the Elizabeth that first married John BELT, and second John LAMB, and died testate in 1737 as Elizabeth LAMB is NOT the daughter of Richard of the 1687 will. In 1748 Philip THOMAS of Anne Arundel County sold the 187.5 acres, the "undivided moiety" of the tract Nanjemy to Thomas HARRISON. (Baltimore Deeds TR#C:89, and TR#C:99, FHL microfilm 013330)

The inventory of Robert CRUMP's estate taken 11 March 1748 was signed by "next of kin" Preposea BOSTICK. (MD Inventories 41:209) A Preciosia CRUMP married Samuel BOSTOCK 14 Jan. 1730. Use of the name Preciosia/Pretiotia among the CRUMP family is added evidence that Richard TYDINGS daughter Elizabeth married Robert CRUMP.

On 27 Dec. 1726 Michael PACQUINET and wife Charity of Bath Co., NC gave a Power of Attorney to our loving "cuzin" John BELT to sell "Nangemy". (Baltimore Deeds IS#I:36, FHL microfilm 013326) (signed as PAQUNETT) This John BELT was the son of John BELT and wife Elizabeth. As cousin was often used for "nephew" it was upon this record that published sources assumed that John BELT's wife Elizabeth was identical to Elizabeth, daughter of Richard TYDINGS.

On 12 Dec. 1750 Charity SELMAN "one of the daughters and devisees of Richard TIDINGS" sold to Thomas HARRISON all right and claim to one moiety or half part of a tract called Nanjemy, the whole tract containing 375 acres. (Baltimore Deeds TR#D:107, FHL microfilm 013330) (Note: Thomas HARRISON would now possess the whole 375 acres. Note also this would be a different Charity SELMAN from the daughter of John TYDINGS and Mary ELIIS that first married Solomon SPARROW, and secondly a SELMON.)

The question is what relation is John BELT, son of John BELT and wife Elizabeth to be called "cousin" of Michael PACQUINET and wife Charity TYDINGS? The elder John BELT in his 1697 will also made a bequest to his "nephew" Thomas RAMSEY. William RAMSEY died testate in Anne Arundel County in 1689 and named wife Pretiotia, eldest son Charles, William, and John. "Protiose" had secondly married by 1692 to Thomas BEVON/BEVANS when they sold the land willed to her by her first husband.

William RAMSEY of Anne Arundel County was about age 43 in 1682, placing his birth as about 1639. It would appear the children of William RAMSEY and wife Pretiotia could be: 1. Charles RAMSEY b. ca. 1671 (of age in 1692); m. Elizabeth (THURSTON) WHALLEY 2. William RAMSEY b. ca. 1673 3. John RAMSEY b. ca. 1674; in Baltimore Co., MD 1695/6 4. (Charity RAMSEY b. ca. 1678; m. ca. 1696 Thomas HODGES)?? 5. "Peshoshia" RAMSEY b. ca. early 1680s; bur. 2 (blank) 1698/9 All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD 6. Thomas RAMSEY b. posthumously ca. 1689; bap. 14 May 1699 All Hallow's Parish as "son of William and "Peshoshia." Called nephew in the will of John BELT, Sr. written in 1697. (Note than many children from families that had Quaker ties appear to have been baptized when they were older at All Hallow's Parish. Elizabeth, widow of John BELT had 4 children from her first marriage baptized at the same time as her daughter Margaret in 1703. The eldest had to be over age 10.)

There is one clue that there may have been two men named Richard TYDINGS. On 10 Aug. 1663, George NOTTLEFOLD/NOTTLEFORD transferred "Foldland" in Anne Arundel Co., MD to Richard TIDING, who on 10 Aug. 1663 as Richard TIDINGS, cooper, granted the deed and assigment to Elizabeth BREWER. Richard signed with his mark, an "R". Richard TYDEINGS who witnessed the 1674 will of Thomas SPARROW, and was an appraiser in 1676 for the estate of John SHAW, 1679 for the estate of Thomas BESSON, and 1684 for the estate of Edmond TOWNHILL also signed with his mark, an "R". The Richard TYDINGS of the 1687 will signed with an "RT".

There was a Richard TYDINGS baptized 29 May 1625 at St. Mary's Whitechapel, Middlesex, England, son of John TYDINGS and wife Margaret (NOT Ann as commonly reported). Some researchers have also reported there was a Richard TYDINGS born in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel County on 4 December 1654, son of John and Ann TYDINGS. There are no records for All Hallow's Parish at this time, and the record cited is actually 4 December 1754, for John TYDINGS and wife Ann having a son Richard.

The use of the names Pretotia among children of Richard TYDINGS and William RAMSEY; Charity and John among the children of Richard TYDINGS, William RAMSEY, and John BELT; and Elizabeth among the children of Richard TYDINGS and John BELT, add to evidence of a relation between the three families. The following theoretical possibilities fit the facts of Thomas RAMSEY being a nephew to John BELT, Sr., and Charity (TYDINGS) PACQUINTT and John BELT, Jr., being cousins to each other.

POSSIBLITY ONE: 1. Richard TYDINGS b. say 1650; m. Charity, b. ca. 1656; he d. ca. 1688/9 Anne Arundel Co., MD 2. Pretiotia TYDINGS b. say 1652; m.1. William RAMSEY/RAMSAY (b. ca. 1639); m.2. Thomas BEVON/BEVANS 3. Elizabeth TYDINGS b. say 1659; m.1. John BELT ; ca. 1677; m.2. 25 July 1701 John LAMB ; d. between 1 Aug. and 14 Oct. 1737 Anne Arundel Co., MD

POSSIBILITY TWO: 1. William RAMSEY b. ca. 1639; m. Pretiotia b. ca. 1652 2. Charity RAMSEY b. say 1656; m. Richard TYDINGS ca. 1674 3. Elizabeth RAMSEY b. say 1659; m. John BELT

POSSIBILITY THREE: 1. Pretiotia -?-, b. say 1652; m. ca. 1670 William RAMSEY (b. ca. 1639) 2. Charity -?-, b. say 1656; m. ca. 1674 Richard TYDINGS 3. Elizbeth -?- b. say 1659; m. ca. 1677 John BELT the three being sisters, father unknown

POSSIBILITY FOUR: 1. John BELT m. ca. 1677 Elizabeth, she b. ca. 1659 1. Pretiotia BELT, b. say 1652; m. ca. 1670 William RAMSEY (b. ca. 1639) 2. Charity BELT b. say 1656; m. ca. 1674 Richard TYDINGS

In that Humphrey BELT in 1663 claimed land for transporation of himself, and Ann, John and Sarah BELT, (theoretical) possibility four would not be possible, in that no Pretiotia or Charity are named, and they could not have been born after 1663.

Note that among the witnesses to John BELT's will, under all scenarios above, John TIDEINGS and Chairity JORDON would have been his nephew and niece, and Thos. HODGES would have been the spouse of his niece. Any relation to the other witnesses Dan'l PIERCE, Darby SWEANY, and Ann PIERCE is unknown at this time.
