James P. McCubbin born May 5, 1755 died March 10, 1824 in Green County, Kentucky. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Commissary in a hospital in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. His service records may be found in the Revolutionary War Pension Claim 1836 and verified in DAR National No. 250045. These records show that he was nineteen or twenty years of age at the time of his enlistment & he was in the battles of Builford and Stono.

He married Mary Cook in Rockingham County, North Carolina on December 29, 1784. Reverend Isaac Cantrell in Rockingham County, North Carolina performed the ceremony. After their marriage they resided in Rockingham County, North Carolina for some time, where James was a gentleman farmer, schoolmaster, and a preacher. In 1807 they moved into Green County, Kentucky, where they lived until their deaths. They had thirteen children. None listed as Elizabeth.

One interesting note about James's son, Joseph: The Hawkins and McCubbins in Kentucky were gunpowder makers beside farmers. The old kettles and grinders were long in existence. They grew some kind of trees along the Green River & Lyn Camp River that were excellent charcoal for making gunpowder. The entire process of powder making was then done by hand and the finishing touch was reducing it to granules by running it through a coffee mill. One of these original old coffee-mills was taken to Hancock, II., by Joseph McCubbin and was still in use as late as 1888. Joseph would relate to his grandchildren about the immense quantities of powder he had ground with this old mill.

It is through Joseph's lineage I have the first idea of what a McCubbin's man may look like. In a letter a J C McCubbin talks about his grandfather, Joseph, and says that he had special facial characters that do not show up in photos. He had clear bright hazel eyes, a roman nose, receding forehead that starts on either side and winds around to the center of the back with some left on top. They also had a beautiful complexion and rosy checks. Had it not been for the nose and forehead, he would have been a handsome man. There was a streak in the family that showed very light blue eyes and light hair.
