RECTOR FAMILY
GRAPHIC

My grandfather and his grandfather collaborated on an effort to put
VET INFORMATIONGRAVE MARKERS
on every veteran's grave in harrison county. I have retyped his work and present what I have here. You can also view the list as it was broken down by cemetary by clicking CEMETARY LISTSHERE. My great grandfather Jacob Swartz (pictured below with wife Annie Fletcher) was superintendent of the IOOF cemetary and a proud member of the GAR. He had access to records no longer in existence and together with my grandfather they set about this project. To my knowledge the project was never completed, Jake died in 1938 and my grandfather seems to have lost interest. I have included all of his notes I have and some additional information from an extensive article concerning the effort published in the Clarksburg Exponent Telegram in 1937.

My mother's family consists of the Bender's, Fisher's, Blake's, Hissam's, Ochletree's, and Shinns. She is a direct descendant of the first settler in Shinnston West Virginia, Levi Shinn. Her great grandmother was his granddaughter. Her father is a descendant of Isaac Bender, a veteran of the War of 1812. He was probably born in Lancaster PA around 1793 possibly in Leacock Township. Nearly all branches of my mother's family settled in Greenbrier, Braxton and Webster counties. Records are very scarce and any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Paternal Lines I'm Working

The Rector's, were some of the earliest settlers in the Germanna Colony. They came to the U.S. from the Siegen-Nausau area in Germany. My branch of the Rector family settled first in the Tygart Valley area and then moved into what is now known as Taylor county. Jesse Rector founded and taught in the first school in Taylor County, Buzzard's Glory. They were very active in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The family lines I am tracing on this side include the Crimms, McKinley's (descendant of Thomas Mckinley and Elizabeth Stewart), Borings, Fox's and the Swartz's.

BETHEL TEMPLE CEMETARY Nelson Rector married Elizabeth McKinley 20 Mar 1832. She was the daughter of William Stuart. One of Nelson's sons, William married Mary Jane Boring Valentine's day 1856. He was born 16 Jul 1833 and died 14 Jul 1896. Mary Jane was born 27 Dec 1839 and Died 31 Mar 1923. They had 10 children Archibald, Alfred, Anna A, Marion T, Elizabeth M, William L.(My g grandfather), Jarrett M, Jesse M., Laura M. (Molly). I would love to hear from anyone researching this line or the Rector's in general. My E-Mail address is: markwood@iolinc.net
