Photo Gallery of My Best Photos

Below are some of what I consider my best photos.

If you would like a copy of a print, please e-mail me at mikesonya@frontier.com for further information. I have so many other photos of landscapes and animals of places I mentioned below. If you are interested in a certain bird, bug or animal, just maybe I have it. Let me know.

1. Swan with water drop

I mentioned this swan in "About Me". This was one of my first digital pictures. Seeing this picture caused me to fall in love with digital photography. I never want to go back to the old cameras.

2. Chula Vista at the "J" Street Pier

Mike and I were saying our good byes to this wonderful park before moving to Idaho in 2004. It was sunset and such a peaceful evening. This park was built after I left home. Before it became a park, it was a place for people to dump their trash in the water and on the land. The land was an empty field where people could drive their off road vehicles and just have fun. It was where I learned how to drive. It had its place, but I wish this park existed when we were young. Whenever I go back to visit my family, I make a stop here.

3. Annual Sheep Crossing

I was so thankful for this picture and the others I took of this event. We were getting ready to leave Verde Valley, Arizona on Mother's Day 2004. I was dragging my feet because we were told that sheep herders were coming through with sheep anytime and I wanted to see them. At around mid morning, someone was running through the campground shouting "They are here!" I grabbed my camera and took off. The sheep herders came from Peru and a visitor happened to speak their language. Our little group of tourists surrounded them and asked a lot of questions. This sheep crossing has been going on for 300 to 400 years. They will continue this path as long no one interferes with the sheep and sheep dogs.

4. Mildred Lake in Lake of the Springs - 2004

On our move to Idaho, we stayed at this park.

5. Buck at Lake of the Springs - 2004

At this park, plenty of deer roamed near campsites. We caught one eating the plants belonging to a camper and even stuck its head inside their RV.

6. Chehalis in Washington in 2004

Another beautiful park.

5. Meriko in 2005

This is one of my favorite pictures of our beautiful and very friendly Chow Chow. She was loved by everyone. Wherever we went with her, people stopped to check her out. Some tourists even wanted their picture taken with her. Meriko was just as much of an attraction as Lake Louise was in Canada 2007. That was really strange.

6. Lame Moose - 2005

This was the very first moose I ever saw. Meriko, my dog, and I were walking up a path when the moose bounded out of the woods adjacent to us. I was very excited!

7. McDonald Lake in Glacier Nat'l Park

July 4, 2005, Mom, Mike, and I took the Red Bus tour through Glacier National Park. This was the view at McDonald Lake where we began the tour. What a gorgeous day! It was my Mom's 80th birthday.

8. Mountain Goats in Glacier Nat'l Park

I took this picture from the bus. To get such a nice picture was a great feeling.

9. Big Horn Sheep in Glacier Nat'l Park

I took this picture from the bus, but I had to turn in my seat quickly. I was so surprised at how clear it came out. Our excellent tour guide told us how rare it was to see so many animals in one tour. We also saw other sheep licking the anit-freeze off the road. Not healthy for them, but these animals love the sweet taste.

10. Turkey in Silverton, Idaho

On a walk around the Silverton community, I looked up and on a stump was this turkey looking around and at us.

11. Eels at Sea World in San Diego, CA

When I took this picture, the aquarium was very dark but I took a chance. I was really surprised at how nice this picture turned out.

12. La Jolla, California

Spring of 2006, my son and I walked along the scenic route in La Jolla early on a beautiful peaceful evening. The spring flowers were in bloom. This picture was walking toward the inlet shared by humans and seals.

13. Crab in La Jolla - tide pools

My son took this picture of a crab next to my feet.

14. La Jolla, California

This has got to be one of my most favorite pictures taken on that same walk mentioned in image (5.). Other people must think so too. I've sold a few of these prints.

15. La Jolla, California - Seal on beach

I got as close as I could to take this picture. The seal didn't care, it just looked at me. On previous visits, I saw seals on one side and humans on the other side sharing this small inlets beach. Both sides enjoying their own turf. This time, the seals had the beach all to themselves.

16. La Jolla

This picture was taken on the other side of our walk from image (5). You can see the seals resting. I loved this whole walk along the La Jolla shores. The only problem was parking.

17. Bison in National Bison Range

On a beautiful June day in 2006, we took a drive through National Bison Range. The previous weeks, the weather was dreary and gloomy for the most part, at least in the Idaho Pan Handle. We got the feeling that all the animals came out to enjoy this sunny warm day like we did. We saw so many animals right in front of us. One Bison was peacefully eating one minute and the next minute, it charged toward our car. We moved just as the Bison crossed the road right behind us.

18. Antelope in National Bison Range

These antelope were in the middle of the road butting each other and wouldn't move out of the road. I got out of the car and took pictures of them as close as possible. I didn't disturb them one bit. They eventually moved on and let us pass them without incident. I loved it!

19. McDonald Lake in Glacier Nat'l Park

This picture was taken June 2007 when we began our trip to Canada and Alaska. What a sunset! I was there among other tourists just mesmerized by this spectacular view. I just couldn't leave the spot for even an instant. Poor Mike and our dog was sitting somewhere back a ways from the view, waiting for me.

20. Mom and Baby Grizzly

While driving north to Banff in Canada, we saw our first bear right next to the highway. How exciting it was for us! We told the ranger at the next Visitor Center we stopped at. She wanted all the details as to where and when we saw them. I guess they like to track them and promised us they wouldn't do anything to them.

21. Big Horn Sheep in Canada

This sheep is licking anti-freeze. We saw this often.

22. Elk in Jasper 2007

My husband, Mike, took this picture. He was trying to park in our chosen campsite when he saw this elk standing in the middle of the road not moving. You can see the RV reflected in her eyes.

23. Clark's Nutcracker

I saw this bird at Lake Louise in Canada 2007 observing me.

24. Big Horn Sheep

We were driving north in Canada 2007, when we had to stop. People were standing around watching a herd of wild Big Horn Sheep walking along the highway getting to another part of the mountain. It appeared that the sheep were blocked by onlooking tourists and so they came toward our direction. I got out and started taking pictures. They were close to me, but not afraid. All of a sudden a baby turned around and demanded to be fed by mom. This was right in front of me, so I took a lot of pictures. Then the mom had enough and sort of shook the baby off. The baby just didn't want to stop! Finally, they continued on their way onto the rocky mountain. I have the series of pictures.

25. Big Horn Sheep

This is the picture when mom and baby continued on their journey. See story - image 24.

26. Bull Elk

We were driving when Mike saw what he thought were antlers peeking above a ledge from the highway. He exited and we saw these bull elk at Talbot Lake, Alberta, Canada - 2007.

27. Black Bear

We saw this beautiful black Bear up on a hill in the middle of a beautiful grassy area in Canada.

28. Stone Sheep

We couldn't believe our luck when we saw these sheep next to the signed boulder in Stone Mountain, Canada.

29. Red-winged Black Bird

We were camping at Toad River Lodge in Canada 2007. What a wonderful place to see all kinds of animals up close! I was able to capture a beautiful reflection of this bird on Reflection Lake.

30. Moose having fun

Moose were enjoying Reflection Lake at the Toad River Lodge all day. I think it was a family coming and going. I have a series of pictures with two moose chasing or coming together. It looked like one was trying to attack the other, but it didn't last more than a few seconds.

31. Mom and Baby Warbler Collage

I found a baby warbler and the mom coming and going to feed her baby in a bush below me. She noticed me but didn't move her baby until I left for a few minutes. When I came back, they were gone. I made a collage of the best pictures. This also was at Toad River Lodge.

32. Young Bull Moose

We stopped at Laird River Hotsprings in Canada 2007. A young moose was watching us. We tourists were walking along a very long boardwalk and apparently this moose wanted to cross over it, which it did. The moose allowed me to take many pictures of him.

33. Mom and Baby Moose

I captured this picture of mom and baby after running across the highway in front of us. We had this experience several times throughout our trip in Canada and Alaska 2007. One time, it was too close for comfort. Mike stopped just barely in time. He said the moose looked right at him and dared Mike to stop her from crossing.

34. Mom and Baby Black Bear

We saw mom and baby black bears far in the distance along the 20 mile road border between Canada and Alaska.

35. Large Ground Squirrel

We were on a bus tour going to Toklat in Denali Nat'l Park, Alaska when I saw this huge squirrel.

36. Mt. McKinley

We were so fortunate to see Mt. McKinley clearly three days in a row in Alaska 2007

37. Beautiful Wild Flowers

This mixture of flowers was taken at Denali View South in Alaska. Mt McKinley was showing in the distance at the viewpoint.

38. Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata

We parked right next to this very large mushroom in Talkeetna, Alaska 2007. We understand it's poisonous.

39. Grazing Black Bear

We stopped next to this bear who could care less we were watching him/her. Our excited large dog tried to greet the bear from inside our RV. She was trying to get on my lap and out the window as I was taking pictures and holding her off. Too funny!

40. A Grizzly Bear fishing

I took many pictures of bears fishing in Hyder, Alaska at the fishing creek. We watched from an observatory boardwalk.

41. View across from Salmon Glacier

We saw Salmon Glacier on a rare sunny and clear day. It was worth the 20-mile drive in our RV out of Hyder, Alaska. But walking over a tiny hill on the other side, we found this view to be absolutely gorgeous.

42. Sunset at Stewart River Campground, Canada

This spectacular sunset went on and on. A storm was approaching soon after.

43. Sunset at Fir Crest Resort in LocLaHache, Canada

We were blessed with another fantastic sunset. As we were watching this from our RV, bats were flying around us. I tried but couldn't get a picture of them. They were way too fast.

44. Flying Grasshopper

I call them clickers because they click and look like butterflies as they fly. I finally got a clear picture of one in mid air. Amazingly, I took it from a distance with my zoom lense. Close up I saw several grasshoppers. It looked like they were courting, but I don't know anything about them.

45. Seattle - view from Freeway

We moved from San Diego with its heavy traffic, but when we passed Seattle, traffic was just as bad if not worse. I was able to take this nice picture when we were at a standstill for several minutes. We were heading home from a wonderful trip to Canada & Alaska in 2007.

46. Yellow-headed Black Bird

I took this picture on one of our drives through the Silver Valley, Idaho near Rose Lake.

47. Butterfly on blooming tree

This picture was taken at the Coeur d'Alene Lake in Idaho

48. Sunset from a Flying J in Nephi, Utah

November 2009, we were heading toward San Diego and caught this beautiful sunset that highlighted this tree.

49. Great Blue Heron attempting to swallow this fish

I observed this heron at Wilderness Lake Resort in California for at least a half hour attempting to eat this fish without luck. I have a series of pictures. It was dinner time and I was reluctant to leave before seeing the end result.

50. Sunset in Torrey Pines, California

January 2010, my girlfriend and I spent the day viewing Torrey Pines and left just before total darkness. We took plenty of stunning pictures.

51. Sunset at Torrey Pines, California

Another similar view with the same tree. I couldn't decide which was better.

52. Young Buck in Washington

We were hiking around Little Diamond, when my husband pointed out this deer watching us.

53. Geese in Fog in Washington

Around 6 am, I awoke to geese honking loudly in Little Diamond Resort. Apparently, I was the only one who went out to see what was going on. All the geese gathered in the field while heavy fog was at ground level. Group by group geese took off, flew around the field before flying away.

54. Bug on Thistle

I have many pictures with bugs on Thistle bushes taken in Little Diamond Resort. This was one of my first pictures of this popular bush and the variety of bugs attracted to it.

55. 2006 - Frogs in Little Diamond, Washington

On our first trip to Little Diamond Resort, the lake had so many of these frogs. In 2008, we saw one dead frog and that was all. Slowly frogs returned, but as of 2012, not like what we saw in 2006.

56. Little Diamond Resort in Washington

A view at one end of this small and beautiful lake. There is abundant wildlife that visit or live here. I loved this park and would hike around the lake nearly every day while observing life. I probably took thousands of pictures of the scenic beauty and its wildlife.

57. Otter at Little Diamond, Washington

On one of our evening walks around the lake, this otter played hide-and-seek with us.

58. Disobedient Gosling

I love telling this funny story. For many days, we could see this naughty gosling swimming ahead of his/her parents and being chased by them or alone on land. This picture shows the gosling coming on land toward me against the parent's wish.

59. Disobedient Gosling

A closer picture of the naughty gosling. We don't know if it survived and/or learned to finally stay with its brothers and sisters. We were gone a few days and never saw a loner gosling again.

60. Disobedient Gosling

The gosling was very close to me before turning back to its family. Parent poked baby while they joined the others. This was also taken at Little Diamond. All the years I observed Geese families at the lake, I never saw any different behavior until then. The wildlife at the park is truly wild.

61. 2007 Canada-Alaska Collage

This is a collage of some of the animals we saw on our trip. Background scenery is of Mt. McKinley, AK.

62. 2007 Canada-Alaska Collage with Meriko, our dog

This is virtually the same picture as 61; however, I inserted our dog in it. She was many times as much a tourist attraction as the other animals. I created this collage first for my scrap book. Then I thought to do the other picture.

63. Yellow Spider moving a bee.

As I was taking a picture of this pink wild rose, I saw the spider turn this wasp over. I have a series of pictures of this. I don't know what kind of spider it is. Do you know?

64. Mule Deer along the River in the Silver Valley

We drove along the Coeur d'Alene River April 2, 2014 and saw wildlife and was very fortunate to get pretty good pictures. Images 64 - 70 are from this nice day.

65. Ruffed Grouse dressed up for courting

Mike saw this grouse alongside the rode and quickly turned around. I was able to take many clear pictures as he strutted his stuff. A special treat! I never saw a full view of a grouse before and now to see it decked out was thrilling.

66. Ruffed Grouse along the River in the Silver Valley

We drove a head and I got out to take more pictures. That's when the grouse stopped strutting, but it took a while for him to tuck away all his plume.

67. Elk Herd along the River in the Silver Valley

I finally got too see and take good pictures of an Elk herd. There are always a few watching while the rest eat. As I was watching them they would ever so slowly drift further away. Mike counted up to 25 elk and then as we drove away we saw another larger group in the woods.

68. Elk herd along the River in the Silver Valley

More pictures of the Elk herd. See one elk maintaining a visual on me.

69. Elk herd along the River in the Silver Valley

Using my zoom lense and then cropping the image, here is a close up on three. In the background is another one.

71. Old barn around Killarney Lake in the Silver Valley

Taken April 2, 2014. This barn is slowly falling apart. We saw this building in better shape a few years back.
