Autumn Adventures 2009

New England and Florida

Yup, I'm getting mighty adventurous in my old age. Even if I do get my seasons reversed. New England in October meant I had to pack cold-weather clothes while wearing summer stuff. Then Florida in November meant that, as soon as I put my summer clothes in the attic, I had to get some down to pack. But I'm cute - right?

I invited Chuck to come with me - on each trip. But he opted to stay home with Maggie and Fergie.

So, on October 20, I flew to Bradley airport, outside Hartford, Connecticut. And got the cutest little car.

Small, so I could reach the pedals. But really good on the highways. And, when I stopped at the first rest stop so I could put on my glasses and read all the controls, I discovered cruise-control! And I love the color.

I drove highways a bit, then took off through the most gorgeous New England fall countryside to Pascoag, Rhode Island. And my best friend since 6th grade, Sandy (and her husband, Rich). Sandy & I started The Room 6 Weekly to write scathing editorials against the Soviets. They were putting that dog up in Sputnik II - with no plans to get her down! And we went on from there. We know that every week Kruschev was quaking in his shoes at our writing. By the way, the dog was not Laika. She was a laika - a Russian Husky - named either Belka or Strelka.

Sandy, in their barn. Or is it stable?

From Pascoag, I drove back to Hartford, Connecticut, to see how our daughter Vikki is doing. She has her own apartment - currently under sort of reconstruction - and a bunch of great friends. Plus a job with an insurance agency.

Vikki and her friend Pixel. We stayed at the house of a friend of theirs. Vikki has no kitchen right now.

And from Harford, up through Massachusetts and all the way up Vermont along the Connecticut River to Lancaster, New Hampshire, to enjoy time with my brother, Al, and his wife, Joanne. And to revel in the White Mountains.

Al and Joanne, with Kaelly and Varna. Walking two dogs is always fun.

A long drive back down to Windsor Locks, Connecticut, a night in a motel, dinner with Vikki, and I flew home on October 30. Just in time for Halloween.

Our only Trick-or-Treaters: Elena the fairy and Mari doing "2 Bee or not 2 Bee".

In less than a fortnight, my cousin Sharon arrived from California, for - literally - a flying visit.

Because she came to then fly with me, on November 13, down to Naples, Florida, to visit our Aunt Milly, who is over 90 and a total hoot.

Back here on November 16. And Sharon flew home the next morning.

But it was a great autumn. I discovered that I can travel on my own - and have fun doing it. And I can have fun travelling with my cousin. So, getting old has more going for it than "getting cute". If offers getting brave and having fun!
