Think back to the mid 1860’s. Imagine traveling by horseback, seeing a circuit rider, longing to hear the Word of God, and to share in
the Sacraments. These are the historical roots of St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church. During this time Pastor Ritter often visited a little group of Lutherans
in the Edon area. This all began to change in 1867 when Pastor Fredrick Grimm
was called to serve St. Peter’s and two other neighboring communities.
Now the occasional visit of the circuit riders ceased
as a new congregation was formed. The first worship services of this infant congregation
were held one mile west of the village limits in a log school house with only twelve members present. A constitution was adopted in the summer of 1867, and the first recorded congregational meeting took place
on January 10, 1872.
From then until now, much has changed. Land was purchased within the village limits. The sanctuary
was built in the fall of 1872, only to be completely destroyed by a fire in 1894. A
new brick structure was built to the Glory of God in 1895, with various additions and renovations taking place over the
years. While the building has changed, and time has passed, one thing remains
constant within the life of the congregation: We love to proclaim the goodness
of the Lord.
Today, we gather in the same brick structure built
over 100 years ago. Attendance has grown from 12 to 120 or more every week. Each of us here for the same reason, to hear the story of our salvation through Jesus
Christ and to be sent out into the world has his disciples, so that everyone may know the grace, love, and forgiveness of
our God!
