Boundary Stones

In 1790, President Washington proclaimed that a survey for the district should begin at a point on Hunting Creek, south of Alexandria, run NW for 10 miles, thence into Maryland NE for 10 miles, then SE for 10 miles and finally SW back to Hunting Creek. Forty square sandstone markers were erected to mark the boundary of the 10 mile square Federal City.
The West boundary stone or "Ellicott Stone" marks the western tip of the original Federal City. It is located at West and Meridian Streets in Falls Church in Andrew Ellicott Park. Originally under the care of the Virginia DAR, the obligation was switched to the Falls Church Chapter and dedication took place in 1952. Because this year's summer storms caused damage to the West stone, plaque, and fence surrounding it, a major project was required to restore it to prime condition.
