was blessed to be a part of a fact finding discussion concerning the Armstead Queen family o f Harrison County, VA/WV about a year ago. This discussion took place amongst members of Hack er’s Creek Pioneer Descendants. Together we sorted out how many wives he had and which childr en were born to that particular wife. I will briefly outline our findings so that people ma y correct their records. I believe Carl E. Queen, from this message board was active in tha t discussion as well, and I would love for him to chime in to verify that the study took plac e, over six or seven months as I recall.Much of the confusion comes from the fact people ha ve accepted the fact that the files of Don Norman are without error. In fact, there are numer ous errors in Don Normon’s files as he will readily verify. Don Norman has done a wonderful w ork in compiling family histories concerning our Hacker’s Creek ancestors. Unfortumately, h e must rely upon others to give him information. He had the names, dates and pedigree of my g reat-grandparents entirely wrong, but took the info from another person, who took it from ano ther person, who took it .... you get my point. We also discovered there were errors in “Th e Queen History & Family Tree” by Stephen Post Queen. I believe some of these errors occurre d because part of the family history was considered gospel because it came from the recollect ions of an elderly family member. Please understand that I appreciate the work of Stephen Pos t Queen and have found his manuscript to be a treasure of information and insight. However, t here are county records that refute some of his information. Our discussion determined tha t Armstead Queen was married 3 times. I will post his information then proceed with the argum ent regarding why the children are assigned as they are.Armstead Queen (Charles, Charles M cQueen) was born 1777, and died Bef. 1830 in Johnstown, Harrison, VA. Eliza Haley Queen, born 1822.The following records supp ort the fact Minnie Jett did not bear the children after 1812 to Armstead Queen:1) Harriso n County marriage records indicate Armstead Queen married Charlotte Norman (daughter of Cleme nt Norman and Jemima Shumate) on 04 April 1812.2) The following land transaction from 19 Ma rch 1821 clearly shows Armstead’s wife is NOT Minnie Jett but Charlotte Norman:Harrison Co. , VA Indenture, Norman to Hutson, 1821Isaac Norman and others To )( Deed John Hutson )( This Indenture made this 19th day of March AD 1821 between Isaac Norman, Martin Norman, Armst ead Queen & Charlotte Queen his wife, Ephraim Jeffries & Tabetha his wife, William Norman, Ba iley Norman of the first part and John Hutson of the other part witneseth? that the said part ies of the first part ????? in consideration of one dollar to them in hand paid by the said J ohn Hutson have granted bargained and sold and hereby do grant bargain and sell to the said J ohn Huston a certain tract or parcel of land situated in the County of Harrison and Commonwea lth of Virginia adjoining lands of the heirs of Clement Norman Deceased, Holdridge Chideste r and others situate on the waters? of Rooting Creek and bounded as followeth as Beginning a t a chesnut oak and running North 87 degrees E 135 ½ poles to a gum then from the said Chesnu t Beginning S 57 ½ degrees East 85 poles to a sugar tree thence North 48 3/4 degrees East 8 4 poles to the aforsaid gum to being that same tract of land once conveyed to said Hutson b y Holdridge Chedester and included in a conveyance from said Huston to Clement Norman decease d. Armstead then marri ed Charlotte Norman. Armstead dies around 1829 as Charlotte remarries Daniel Jett on 9 Septem ber 1830 according to Harrison County Marriage Records (Bk 3 pg 58) An estate deed regardin g property formerly belonging to Armstead and Charlotte reflects her new name:Harrison Coun ty Deeds - Bk29:1 25A. on Rooting Creek in 1839 conveyed to James Little by John B. Queen an d Isabella his wife, Charlotte Jett, former wife of Armstead Queen, James N. Queen and Sara h his wife, Joseph Jenkins and Elizabeth his wife, Charles A. Queen and Charlotte his wife, L evi H. Queen and Sarah his wife, William Been and Nancy his wife, Willaim Oldacre and Lydia h is wife, Martin M. Queen and Margaret his wife, Jesse Garrett and Sarah his wife, John Dennis on Jr. and Lettice his wife and Jemima queen heirs of Armstead Queen dec., all of Harrison.Th is was a very hard discussion for me to endure as I had always been “told” and believed tha t my ancestor was James Jett Queen, son of Minnie Jett. I had accumulated a mountain of infor mation regarding the Jett family, and frankly, found it an assault on my family history tha t there could be anything to the fact Charlotte was his mother. In the end truth should be ou r driving force, not personal pride. I have changed my files to reflect the truth and I a m a very PROUD descendant of not only Charlotte Norman, but her sister Sarah Norman as well. Just a side note to ponder - Look at the children of Charlotte Norman. Two girls are named af ter Charlotte's family members, Lettice and Jemima.
