BIOGRAPHY: See http://www.io.com/gen/story.doc for a documentaryhistory of the early Stalnake rs. Jacob is listed by most genealogists as the son of Captain Samuel, but may be a brother . Jacob Jr., generally given as Jacob Sr.'s son, may be a nephew. There is no documentatio n for the births of any of the children listed except Valentine, John George, and Catherine . Jacob Jr. and Samuel stated their ages in Revolutionary pension claims. Only Andrew and w ife Elizabeth are mentioned in Jacob's will.
"Jacob Stalnaker, a son of Samuel Stalnaker, was born c. 1710 and died in 1792. His will wa s dated April 25, 1791 and was proven in August 1792. He married Elizabeth Truby. Elizabet h was a daughter of John and Esther(Westfall) Truby. Jacob came to Tygarts River Valley in 1 772 and established a "Tomahawk Claim" that was later surveyed and grants signed by Governo r Benjamin Harrison of VA" Don Norman
Son Adam was killed by Indians at Spook Hollow, near Beverly, Randolph Co. VA (WV).Son John w as also killed by Indians.

"[March 1782] Disappointed in their hopes of involving the inhabitants of the Buchannon settl ements in destruction the savages went on to the Valley. Here, between Westfall's and Wilson' s forts, they came upon John Bush and his wife, Jacob Stalnaker and his son Adam. The two lat ter beingon horse back and riding behind Bush and his wife, were fired at, and Adam fell. Th e old gentleman rode briskly on, but some of the savages were before him and endeavored to ca tch the reins of his bridle, and thus stop his flight. He however, escaped them all. The hors e from which Adam Stalnaker had fallen, was caught by Bush, and both he and Mrs. Bush got saf ely away on him." Border Warfare Chapter 15

Old Jacob Stallnicker [Stalnaker], and Adam, his son, lived in Jacob Westfall's fort. Adam ha d been to Colonel Ben Wilson's mill and was returning, he and his father. They had gotten the ir flour and were returning home. The Indians fired and killed Adam. His father escaped on hi s horse. Old man, I think, said he saw but two Indians. I saw the tree that Adam fell agains t (the blood was there a long time) and I saw him after he was scalped and nobody ever woul d have known him. He had been as pretty a man as you would see in a month. But his face was n ow all sunk away to be not wider than your hand.
John White lived at Jacob Westfall's fort. Killed by the Indians in the neighbourhood of Jaco b Westfall's fort. Had married Adam Stallnicker's sister, Katy. Adam helped to dig the grave . John White had gone up to the upper part of the valley on business. Adam Stallnicker helpe d make a coffin, which they sent up to bring White down in, when he was killed and while it w as gone, he helped dig the grave in which White was to be buried. It was in the middle of sum mer. They found him so black and mortified they couldn't bring him and so brought back the co ffin. Not long after, Adam Stallnicker was put in the same coffin and interred in the same gr ave which himself had prepared.

In the year 1781, I went down with 40 or 50 men under Captain Tiverbaugh, to supply the stati ons in Tygertís Valley. We passed on our way one Gregg's, on Seneca, a branch of the North fo rk of the South Branch. Two or three days before we came along, while the old man Gregg was o ut hunting his horses, the Indians came to the house, and shot Gregg's weaver at the loom thr ough the window. They then came in a tomahawked Gregg's little daughter, that was quilling fo r him. While this was doing, another daughter (Jesse Gregg's sister) and the only other perso n at home, came in, shut the door, went by the Indian, and stood in the jam, by the fire as i f stunned with of fright: When she saw what was doing, she went out again, and ran over to Pa ul Keeter's (3 Miles) When old Mr. Gregg came towards home, from the back of the plantation a nd saw the house set on fire, and the Indians with the trenchers out in the yard, eating he h allowed out, cursed them for etc. When they got there from Paul Keeter's the little girl wa s scalped, and crawling away from the fire. She died in consequence of the heat of the fire b efore, or by the time she could be gotten to his house. There were but four forts in theValle y -- Wilson's, Westfall's, Cassidy's, and the first I forget. Two days before we got there, w ithin a 1/2 mile of Westfall's we saw them laying the body of Captain Adam Stonemaker. [He] H ad on an officer's coat and Maccaroni-hat. In the evening of the day before, they went to Wil son's fort, and were on their return, when the Indians shot him right in the small of the bac k, missing his friend, who got into the Westfall's fort, and gave the alarm. His horse gave t hree jumps before he fell off. We crossed Cheat nine times before we got to Wilson's and West fall's. We went in March to Westfall's staid about half the time at Cassidy's and returned ba ck in August. We were not interrupted any after was got to the Stations.

Maxwell's History of Barbour County says of Ward s/o Andrew s/o Holsberry s/o William that hi s great-grandfather "came from England and settled near Meadowville. Two brothers crossed th e ocean with him. One settled in Randolph and one in Gilmer County."
