Children at Union Acres
A sample of our homes

Children love Union Acres. It is a natural paradise that invites a young mind to explore the surrounding beauty of  Mother Nature and to experience "work" as play. There is a 10mph speed limit on our private roads to create a safe environment for outdoor play. Our spacious meadow is perfect for ball playing, swimming, and running around. There is a mini basketball court and a community center for games and instruments. The younger kids have a sandbox and playground. A small creek runs adjacent to the common meadow, and there are several trails to explore.

In contrast to most cities and developed areas, Union Acres children are allowed the freedom to grow in an environment that offers them safety and an abundant supply of rich learning experiences along with the extended family companionship of other adults and children here.

Some of our children have been home schooled for part of their learning experience; others have attended local public schools, including a nearby Charter School based on Outward Bound concepts.

At Union Acres there ore opportunities for adults as well as children to play!

Fun activities nearby for children include Santa's Land as well as other rides and amusement parks in nearby Cherokee, Gatlinburg, and Pigeon Forge, along with hiking, ruby mining, caving, kyaking, canoeing, whitewater tubing and rafting, and much more.

Mountain Discovery Charter School is a nearby local school offering Expeditionary Learning experiences for their students.

Mountain Discovery Charter School is a North Carolina Public School which is governed independent of the local Board of Education by local parents, business people, and other community members. MDCS's educational approach is based on Expeditionary Learning, which emphasizes hands-on learning, team teaching, and reinforcing educational skills with real world experiences. Class sizes are small, and there is equal emphasis on all subjects, including science, music, and art. Students at MDCS learn not only by listening, counting, reading, and writing, but also by building, drawing, singing, and moving. MDCS is small enough to know each child individually, to recognize what is special in each child, and to teach each child to be confident in who he or she is and what he or she can do.

Experiential learning allows a child to "live" the lesson through project-based study. These hands-on lessons give the curriculum a real world relevance, and they motivate the child to grasp material more fully than in a traditional approach.
