Lisbon Masonic Hall, 1968

The Lisbon Lodge No. 229, Free and Accepted Masons held their first formal meeting, under dispensation, on April 18, 1867 in a store building located on the east side of Kenowa in Sparta Township, Kent County.  The first meeting, under Charter, was held January 16, 1868.  Officers were elected at the February 6, 1868 meeting.   Public consecration of the lodge room and installation of the officers was held on February 13, 1868.  Dr. Charles E. Koon became the first Worshipful Master.

From 1868 until 1892, the Lisbon Lodge met in a hall owned by C. E. and J. S. Koon.  The hall was located on the west side of Kenowa in Chester Township, Ottawa County.  In 1881 the Koon brothers agree to build a 14 x 26 addition to the present building, rather than have the lodge build a new hall.  Then, in 1892, the Lodge bought the hall and barn for $950.00. The barn was remodeled to provide stalls for 28 horses and the first floor of the lodge hall was remodeled as a dining room.

Three new Lodges were established from Lisbon Lodge No. 229: Sparta Lodge No. 334 in Sparta, Ravenna Lodge No. 441 in Ravenna, and Casnovia Lodge No. 461 in Casnovia.
