Older homes offer unique problems and opportunites for change. Often the wiring is out of date or damaged.
If the house has been empty (which many of ours were) the plumbing may have been badly damed because of pipes freezing. Heat
systems may be outdated, or even non-existent. Single pane windows need replacement and well as old doors. Insulation in older
houses is often inadequate or sometimes non-existent. We have remodeled many old houses during the past 15 years, some
we've taken back to the joists and completely re-built. We must say these homes bring many challenges, but over the years
we have seen many problems and found many creative solutions, and we relish the challenge!

In this house, the kitchen was entirely too small for the size of the house, there was a patio between the kitchen and
a bedroom additon which has improper drainage. We took out the wall of the kitchen and the wall of the breezeway adjoining
the house and the bedroom, and increased the kitchen area.

We gutted the original kitchen, which extensive water damage to the ceiling because of a leak in an upstairs bathroom.
We left the breakfast nook, but had new cabinets built which wen to the ceiling, increasing the storage space. We added
antiques stained glass to one bank of cabinets, put in recessed lighting over all work spaces and built a work island in the
middle.
We chose white oak flooring and built cabinets to match. We used pine trim around the doors and windows, staining
it to match the cabinets and floor. The old plaster walls which were left were covered with knock-down dry wall to match
the new sheet rock walls and ceiling. A flourescent light was installed over the island and our local stained glass artist
constructed a stained glass window to install over the sink. A flourscent light behind that window can luminate it when desired.
Just a little word of warning:
When remodeling or additing to an existing house, no one can predict what problems might arise. Changes to the
existing house may neccesitate further changes to insure the structure meets existing housing codes and standards. Cost estimates
may be inappropriate in such situations. The contractor will work closely with the home owner to keep costs down while
insuring the feasibilty and quality of all changes.
