A mid-November trip to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area

Every fall, peaking in mid-November, the sandhill cranes that summered in Minnesota and Canada make their way through west-central Indiana before wintering in Georgia and Florida.  This is where they congregate for several weeks.  It is truly one of nature's great spectacles!  It was well worth the 100-mile trip from Middlebury.

25,000 sandhill cranes!

Seven-foot wingspans--pretty impressive overhead!

Crazy as cranes to be out in this weather!

The cranes will be back in March.  Call Jasper-Pulaski F&WA at 219-843-4841 for the weekly crane count.  Every year, some 30,000 bird watchers enjoy this amazing natural drama.  That's about the same number as the cranes--but the people don't come all at once!
