Petrys' Lake Independence Fishing Adventure

A June 2011 Trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Sunrise over Lake Independence on our first morning.

We returned to Lake Independence this year (third time in the last five years), but stayed in a different cabin in order to accomodate our friends Dave & Sue Bibbee, with whom we shared the first week.  Independence Cottage sits right on the main lake instead of tucked back in tiny Alder Bay.  It is larger and more comfortable than Mark's Place, so I doubt I'll ever get Amy back into the former (and cheaper) cabin!  It also has a brand new dock with very few steps from the cabin to the boat, so that's worth something to me, too.  Situated at the foot of the Huron Mountains and just a tiny bit south of the Lake Superior shoreline, Lake Independence is a fine smallmouth bass fishery.  Nearly all the fish run big.  It also boasts walleyes and northern pike.  The jumbo perch fishing has fallen off the past few years, but they may stage a comeback.  I've caught perch to 13-1/2 inches in past years.  Trout fishing in the area streams (Alder Creek, Yellowdog River, Iron River) is very good, with lots of beautiful native brook trout and stocked rainbows and browns.  If you'd ever like to enjoy this spot of God's beautiful creation, check out the Stoltz's website at Alder Bay Lodging(Click any picture for a larger format.)

This one's no 5-pounder, but I caught my share of 19-inchers in 12 days of fishing.

You can launch your boat at the Perry County Park across the lake, or put into Lake Superior at the Big Bay Marina in town.  Some quaint restaurants and shops in the small town, including the Lumberjack Tavern where a famous murder occurred during WW II.  It was made into a movie starring Jimmy Stewart.  Title: "Anatomy of a Murder."  A classic!  VHS copies in every cabin at Alder Bay Lodging.

Lake Independence is the nearer body of water, with Superior in the background.

Wildflowers were everywhere in the woods.

Yep; that's me behind them Foster Grants...

Brookies.jpg
Spent three days tromping rugged trout streams. The brookies were beautiful...and delicious.

The Huron Mountains rise to the south of the lake. A good bassin' day.

Particularly proud of this 19-incher. First fish on my new 8-wt. flyrod.

Last night in camp was a beautiful evening for a boat ride.

Dave & Sue show how it's done with a 19-inch smallie of nearly 5 lbs.

From the top of Thomas Rock you can see the whole world!

Springtime in the Huron Mountains is a sight to behold.

And we visited some lovely waterfalls.

But enough with hikes; we were there for the big smallies!

To be honest, we had lots of Lake Superior weather--cold, rainy, misty, foggy, windy days.  But we had enough of the other to enjoy the balance.  Hey: it's wilderness.  You take what you get!

I told you the bass bite in rainy weather. Check out that Firetiger Skitter-Pop.
