My Mustang was built in June of 1970 (exact date pending).  It was the sportroof body style, commonly known as a fastback.  My VIN is VIN 0F02H202675. Its factory specs are as follows:

  • Deaborn, Michigan assembly plant
  • H-code 351C (2V)
  • FMX 3 speed automatic
  • 9" open differential with 2.75:1 ring and pinion
  • Manual Drum Brakes - all 4 wheels
  • Power Steering
  • Standard Interior (Black Vinyl)
  • AM Radio
  • No Air Conditioning

As you can see, nothing special.  Nearly NO options.  The only oddity is the paint code...  "Y." For those of you who have VIN codes memorized, you will realize that this is not one of the color codes used by Ford in 1970.  I tracked this code to any and every book I could find, but NONE of them had a solution.  I did finally solve the mystery though, and it was by dumb luck. During the Auburn Cord Dusenberg auction in Auburn, Indiana, I found the opportunity to search through some literature for 1970 Mustangs. Among the advertisements and documentation, there were several VIN books.  Of course, none of the Ford books provided insight.  At the time I was grossly interested in the Mercury Cougar.  I had no plans to adopt them as my car of choice, but they were akin to the Mustang (and many Cougar parts interchange with the Mustang, so it is always good to know them).  I found mixed in among the leaflets a Mercury VIN decoding book.  As I was leafing through it, I saw what I had been searching for: my color code.  It was listed as a Mercury color under the name "Medium Bronze Iridite."  Like I said... odd.

I recently asked over at VMF how rare my car was because I have not seen too many plain Sportsroof cars around.  The general consensus was that it was not that rare, but that plain Sportsroofs were either converted to Mach 1 cars or met a fate with the crusher.  Allen Cross at Fomoco.com wrote me to tell me that my car was "rare" in the sense that there were very few Sportsroofs with a 351cid engine and an automatic transmission.  He in fact made mention that only about 3,400 sportsroof cars were made with a 351cid engine and an automatic, and the vast majority of those cars sported the Mach 1 package. He guessed there were fewer than 1,000 plain Sportroof cars with the 351cid engine and an automatic.  For this very reason, I will be keeping the FMX from my car when I swap in the Toploader.  Thanks Allen, I will order my VIN report soon!
