= Disc Brake Conversion =

Here is my disc brake conversion.  Many of these pictures have been previously published, but I wanted to rewrite the conversion and make things a little cleaner.

I have front drum brakes.  For a car capable of 120+ MPH, they are inadequate.  I, of course, do not DRIVE that fast, but it is always good to know that the stopping capability is there if one ever needs it.  To do my conversion, I first thought of finding a Granada or Monarch as a donor.  I even began a search and assembled a parts list.  Fortunately, I saw an add for a set of 1971 spindles, dust shields, and calipers before I made any purchases.  What is the advantage of that? Well, the 1971 stuff is a direct bolt in on my car.  Here they are, raw, sand-blasted in my cabinet, and after they have been powder coated:

Spindles as they were received
Spindles and calipers after sand-blasting

All I had to do was aquire stock 1970 parts and I could get the job done (spindles from 1970 to 1973 are all the same).  The first problem was acquiring rotors.  Everywhere I looked, I saw prices at or around $125-$140 a PIECE!  I was not about to pay nearly $300 after tax for rotors... if I did, I might as well have gone with a SSBC conversion kit!  Luckily, and I mean by PURE DUMB LUCK, I stumbled across JCWhitney.com.  They have the rotors I need there for a mere $45 a piece!  Here they are, and the process I went through to get the hub portions painted:

Bare rotor as it was received
Rotor masked off for painting
Rotor after 3 coats of hi-temp primer
Rotor after 3 coats of hi-temp black paint
The finished rotor!
