Henry Clarke Ash [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3 on 16 Nov 1825 in Warwickshire (Dale End), Birmingham, England. He was christened 4, 5, 6, 7 on 18 Feb 1831 in St. Philip, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He died 8, 9, 10, 11 on 12 Jun 1898 in Marylebone, London, England. He worked 21 as Ice Merchant on 18 Aug 1892. His will was probated 22 on 6 Sep 1898 in London, England.

Other marriages:
John, Jane
Taylor, Mary Sarah

Surname variously as: Ash, Clarke, and Clarke-Ash.
Henry Clarke ASH and Jane JOHN never married. Jane and her children assumed the surname of CLARKE around 1861. Further there seemed to be good relations between the ASH and CLARKE families - Minnie CLARKE named a son Reginald Charles and her "step-brothers" were Reginald and Charles ASH.

Henry is listed as the father of Bertha Ann (Clarke) Brett (26 Oct 1856 - 7 Feb 1926) on Bertha's death certificate.

Bertha's son, William H. Brett, is listed as nephew of Charles A Renouf and Lucille (Clarke) Renouf in the 1891 Guernsey census.

Listed as Henry CLARKE-ASH in grandma's papers and in the death record of his daughter, Lucille. "Grandma's papers" also list his age as 72½, but the dates listed calculate to 71½ - which *could* imply his birth as 16 Nov 1825 for which we'd have an exact match to Henry Clarke ASH, son of Henry and Helen ASH (pilot.familysearch.org).

In addition, "grandma's papers" list with Henry Clarke-Ash the following: Reginald Clarke ASH (b 2 Jan 1873), Florence Mary ASH (b 24 Feb), Mary Sarah ASH (b 5 Mar), Charles Henry ASH (b 21 May), and Harry ASH (b 6 Sep).

In June of 2010 we concluded Henry CLARKE (CLARKE-ASH) father of Lucille E. CLARKE (1860-1955) was the same person as Henry Clarke ASH (1825-1898) son of Henry and Helen. This is based on several things. 1. Henry's occupation is Ice Merchant in 1891 and 1892. 2. Audrey (KNOWLTON) DONNEL, gg-granddaughter confirms that Henry never married Jane JOHN. 3. Records maintained by Lucille RENOUF list the family of Henry Clarke ASH and her RENOUF lineage on the same page.

"Henry C." Age 68 in 1891 census, St Geo Hanover Sq, London, England and born Warwickshire Birmingham.

The Henry CLARKE-ASH noted in Lucille JORGENSEN's record indicates Henry was born 16 Nov 1826 and died 12 Jun 1898, but age 72 1/2, so I believe the birth date is off by a year as 1826 wiuld make him 71 1/2 at death.

Henry CLARKE ASH had a number of patents:
-PISTON FREEZING MACHINE AND ICE CO., 301 & 303 Oxford Street, W.—(1) Ash's Patent SelfFeeding Refrigerator. (2) Ash's Patent SelfFiltering Refrigerator. (3) Ordinary Box Refrigerators. (4) Ash's Kaffee-Kannes. (5) Ash's Patent Piston Freezing Machines, Filters, Electroplated Ice Jugs and Butter Coolers. (6) Norwegian Cooking Apparatus. (Class 11.) Elizabeth Susannah Standen 1 was born on 2 Dec 1829. She was christened 2 on 6 Dec 1829 in St George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England. She died 3 about Dec 1854 in St. Martin. She was buried 4 on 2 Dec 1854 in Brompton Cemetery, London, London, England. Elizabeth married 5 Henry Clarke Ash on 28 Oct 1852 in St Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex, England.

They had the following children.

  M i
Henry Ash 1 was born 2, 3 on 6 Sep 1853 in Middlesex, London, England. He was christened 4 on 12 Nov 1854 in Saint Martin in the fields, Westminster, Middlesex, England.

This could be Harry ASH from 'grandma's datesbook'; note the exactly matching birth day. Since his is listed in the datesbook I assume he lived into the 1900s.

1861 England Census > Middlesex > Chelsea > Chelsea North West > District 10:
"I'm now checking what I have for Henry Clarke ASH and have noticed that his son Henry is with him in 1871.  I'd forgotten that.  When I couldn't find him in 1861 I assumed he had died, but obviously that death I found for him is incorrect!  Knowing that he was alive in 1861 I searched again and have found him aged 7 in a private school in Chelsea.  The birthplace is given as Middx Brixton, but I don't think that's a problem.  I'm sure it's him, a boarder like the ASH boys in 1881 and also the three young CLARKEs in Jersey in 1871.  Also the school is in Markham Square which is only a short distance from Sloane Square where Jane JOHN and Bertha CLARKE were in 1871."  [Sue Mills]
F ii Helen Ash was born on 9 Oct 1854.

Henry Clarke Ash [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3 on 16 Nov 1825 in Warwickshire (Dale End), Birmingham, England. He was buried 12 on 13 Jun 1898 in Camden, London, England. Henry married 13 Mary Sarah Taylor 14 on 13 Jun 1860 in St George the Martyr, Queen Square, Middlesex, England.

Florence Mary Ash was born 1 on 24 Feb 1861 in Kennington, Surrey, England. She was christened 2 on 29 Nov 1863 in Craven Methodist Chapel, Westminster, Middlesex, England. She died 3, 4 on 19 Feb 1924 in Willesden, Middlesex, England.

Age 2 mo, in 1861 census.

1871 England Census > Kent > St Peter The Apostle > District 26: Florence Mary Ash appears to be a visitor with some unknown people< MAtthew and Maria W Geneste. Her birthplace says London Middx which is not quite correct, but she isn't anywhere else as far as I can see, so I guess these people didn't know exactly where she was born. Lambeth is Surrey, south of the river and Middx is north. Lambeth would be London now.

Age 36, found with parents Henry C and Mary S ASH in 1891.

"Florence M. Ash, daughter," was "present at the death 7 Wigmore Street Marylebone". This is found on the 12 June 1898 death certificate of Henry Clark Ash.

Note that this is NOT the Florence Mary Ash (age 34, daughter of Charles Albeck Ash) who married Gordon Inwood on 3 Dec 1907 in County London.

Florence Mary Ash who died 19 Feb 1924 in Middlesex, England had her will probated 27 May 1924 in London. The will index notes: "ASH Florence Mary of The Convent Crownhill-road Willesden Middlesex spinster died 19 February 1924 Probate London 27 May to Leonard William Goodwyn surveyor.
