Public works entrepreneur and architect, Honorary President of the Association of Public Works Entrepreneurs, the very first association of its kind in Belgium created by him with his sons Andre and Alphonse September 1, 1874, Officer of the militia citizenry.
He is born at Antwerp on 29th of January 1812(certificate nr:189) as the legal son of HERTOGHS Guillaume (William) Joseph, profession: Carpenter, Christened at Antwerp in the parish of St. Walburgis on 17-6-1787 and STEVENS Anna Catharina, baptised at Antwerp on the 7th of April 1887 at the parish of St. Laurentius. His parents married at Antwerp on 23rd August 1809( Certificate nr 287).
His Grandparents were from father's side: Arnoldus (Carpenter) and VANDENBRANDT Anna Maria - Both still living at the time of the wedding (8/23/1809)
And from Mother's side : STEVENS Joannes Baptista, who died at Antwerp in the parish of St. Laurentius on 10/10/1794 and FASSEUR Joanna Maria, who died on the 4th of Ventose of the year 11. She is the widow in 2nd wedding of Joannes Baptista CALUIJ, lady farmer.
Joanna Maria FASSEUR was the daughter of Jacobus who died at Antwerp on 02/28/1786, in the parish of St. Willebrordus and VANDIVORT Maria Elisabeth, who died at Antwerp as well on 12th of October 1779 at the parish of St. Willebrordus as well.
STEVENS Joannes Baptista was the son of Joannes Baptista who died at Antwerp in the parish of St. Laurentius on 03/13/1792 and VERHELST Anna, who died at Antwerp in the age of 74 on 25 Nivose of the year 6.
Joseph Hertogs went to settle in Vilvorde on May 30, 1890 probably after the death of his wife.  Otherwise it is in Antwerp that he lived and made his family business prospered from a saw-mill and wood trade to an entrepreneurship in public works.
Note that he is called Joseph Albert HERTOGS, Father of Joseph Albert HERTOGS, Jr. in a history that I received from Aunt Nancy Knowlton. His business was called "Hertogs Bros." In this document his death is around 1905 at age 83. That does not match his birth date. The death record shows that he was 83 upon his death in 1895.
