He was a paperboy in the mill district at the time of the Great Flour Mill Explosion of 1878.

Joseph was basically a merchant all his life working in various department stores including The Leader Company, the Golden Rule, and with two partners (Mr. Ernest Hutchinson and Mr. Rector) in the Rector Company. During the Great Depression of the 1930's, the Rector Company closed. Joseph and his family farmed from 1933 through 1942 when he went to work at the Dayton Company. Joseph worked there until the date of his death 1 November 1949*. He was, throughout his adult lifetime, an astute and responsible businessman. Work was really his hobby. He was working six days a week - driving 50 miles per day - at the time of his death at either 79 or 80 years of age.

One of the happiest events of his later life was that he was employed towards the end of the depression by his old partner, Mr. Rector, and he wore suits willed him by Mr. Hutchinson. The second happy event was his employment at the Dayton Company at age 72 - full-time - during the Second World War.
