GRANDVILLE -- When Ted Zondervan purchased the Rainbow Grill in 1954, the eatery featured two tables and eight stools.

When he sold the business to his son, Doug, 40 years later, it had become the gathering place for Grandville notables and could seat 270.

It was Ted Zondervan 's love of people that led to the restaurant's steady growth, his son said.

Mr. Zondervan died Sunday after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was 79.

Born in Grandville, he married Helen Zandbergen in 1947, and the couple had four children.

While business was important to him, Mr. Zondervan also served his church and community. He was both a deacon and elder at Zion Reformed Church, served as a volunteer on the Grandville Fire Department and was a Rotarian.

Mr. Zondervan also served on the Grandville school board, the city's Planning Commission and business relations committee and the Big Star Lake Association board.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his grandson, Adam Timmer.

Mr. Zondervan is survived by his children, Doug and Bev Zondervan , Dennis and Lynne Zondervan , Deb and Doug Timmer, and Dan and Joni Zondervan ; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
