Aaltje van de Heuvels [Parents] was born 1 about 1887 in Kampen, Overijssel, The Netherlands. Aaltje married 2 Roelof van Dieren on 22 Jun 1916 in Kampen, Overijssel, The Netherlands.

Johann Nicholaas "Klaas" Hertel [Parents] was born 1, 2, 3 in 1774 in Spielberg (Duitsland), Germany. He died 4, 5 on 27 Nov 1840 in Abcoude-Baambrugge, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Klaas married 6, 7 Sophia Anna Zuidhoek on 3 Aug 1834 in Loenen, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Klaas worked 3 as Gardener from 1825 to 1830 in Weesperkarspel, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands.

Other marriages:
de Ruijter, Maria

Hertel is seen variously as: Herdel, Herstel, and Hertel in the genlias.nl data. On marriage to Sophia Anna Zuidhoekhis father is Ostwald Herdel and Johann Nicolaus' birth place is Spielberg (Duitsland). On his death record his father is Johann Herstel. Johann and Ostwald must be the same person or their was confusion about the record of his mother's multiple marriages.

Johann Nicholaas Hertel was married in Eemnes-buitendijks. Eemnes is a little farmers village nearby the fishermans place Spakenburg. Eemnes is situated West of Amersfoort, South of Amsterdam, and close to Hilversum, Baarn and Laren. Buitendijks means "outside the dike". The other side was called Eemnes-binnendijks ("innerside of the dike").

Eemnes is close to the Eemmeer, a recreation place (watersports). Before WWII the Eemmeer did not exist; it was IJsselmeer and before 1932 the IJsselmeer was: Zuiderzee. The was an open connection to the Northsea in that time. In the Middle Ages many cities at the Zuiderzee coast were famous ("Hanzesteden"): Harderwijk, Enkhuizen, Kampen, Medemblik, etc etc).

Noted as "Jan Nicolaas Hertel geboren te Breitenborn" in the Amsterdam Archives. Jan Nicolaas, his daughter Maria Magdalena, and his wife Maria de Ruijter (until her death) are found in the Amsterdam archives (1824 - 1831). They live in Weesperkarspel, at Smal Weesp, nr 89. He was gardener by profession. Sophia Anna Zuidhoek 1 was born 1 about 1791 in Loenen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. She died 2 on 19 Jan 1872 in Kockengen, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Sophia married 3, 4 Johann Nicholaas Hertel "Klaas" on 3 Aug 1834 in Loenen, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Oostweld Hartel 1 was born in Germany. Oostweld married Maria Magdalena Krul.

Seen as Johan in the death record of his son - probably an erroneous reference to Jurrien Ewig, second husband of Maria Magdalena Krul. His surname has various spellings - Herdel, Herstel, Hartel, Bartels.

The "Ancestral History of The Wieberen Hertel Family" by Arnold Hertel documents the marriage of Maria de Ruijter and Johann Nicholaas HERTEL  as 29 Apr 1804. It also notes his father as one, Gerardus CRAAN, which I believe is in error. I believe that Gerardus CRAAN/KRAAN was the step-father and last husband of Maria Magdalena KRUL. Maria Magdalena KRUL being the birth mother of Johann Nicholaas. Most of the proof and evidence comes from the GenLias.nl Dutch record data.

Genlias has a death duties record index for the death of "Johan Nicolaas HERTEL" on 27 November 1840. This entry tells nothing about Johan's parents. But there is also a Death Register entry for "Johann Nicolaas HERSTEL" who died same place, same date. My initial reaction to finding this was to discount it as not 'our' Johann Nicholaas as I expected his father to be Gerardus CRAAN. There is evidence that Johann Nicholaas HERTEL's mother, Maria Magdalena KRUL was married at least three times. http://www.gensdvf.nl indicates that a middle husband of Maria Magdalena KREULING was Johan Georg EWIG. And the death record above may be a simple confusion of husband's names.

In the gensdvf.nl record we see reference to a first husband "Oswalt Bartels". I suspect that this was a mis-reading of HARTELS or HERTEL or HERDEL, or he was the son of Bartel.

The marriage (in addition to his first to Maria de Ruijter) of "Johann Nicolaus HERDEL" (of Spielburg, Germany)  and "Sophia Anna ZUIDHOEK" indicates that the father of Johann Nicolaus was Ostwald HERDEL.

"Catrina HARTEL" who died 22 Dec 1839 has "Oostweld HARTEL" and "Maria Magdalena KRUL" as parents. So I tend to believe that Oostweld was the given name of our HERTEL forefather.

So just who is the Gerardus CRAAN found in Uncle Arnold's "Ancestral History .."? I see him on the death record of "Maria Magdalena KRUL" as her partner. He was step father of our Johann Nicholaas HERTEL and he is probably listed as father (rather than step-father) on Johann's marriage record.

The gensdvf web site supports this by listing Gerardus CRAAN as the step-father of Johanna Elizabeth EWIG, daughter of Maria Magdalena KRUL and Jurrien (Johan?) EWIG. Note also that Johan Nicolaas HERTEL's daughter was "Maria Magdalena HERTEL", named for her grandmother.

Maria Magdalena Krul 1 was born about 1754 in Germany. She died 2 on 28 Jul 1824 in Amersfoort, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Maria married Oostweld Hartel.

Other marriages:
Ewig, Jurrien
Kraan, Gerardus

www.craanen.com provides a clue that a 31 Jan 1799 marriage record be be found for Gerardus Kraan and Maria Magdalena Kreuling who may have been born in Frankfort.

Ancestry Library has a baprism record for a Maria Magdalena Kreul on 20 Sept 1754 in Benningen u. Poppenweiler, Württemberg, Deutschland; the daughter of Johann Wilhelm Kreul and Veronica. The date is correct and her Maria's son was named Johann, possibly for his father.

The death record for Maria Magdalena Krul on genlias.nl records her as "huisvrouw" of Gerardus Kraan. It is likely that she is the mother of Johan Nicholaas Hertel, but I'd guess that Gerardus Kraan is not Johan's father as a death record for Johann Nicolaas Herstel (27-11-1840 in Abcoude-Baambrugge) gives Johann Herstel and Maria Krul as parents.
