OMER T. GILLETTE, assistant to the chair of surgery and secretary of the medical faculty, a resident of Iowa City; was born June 28, 1845, at Terre Haute, Indiana. He was a soldier in the late civil war, serving in company D, 132d Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He graduated from the State University of Indiana, in 1866; he received the honor of his class; he attended lectures at the Medical College at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the winter of 1867 and ‘68, and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons 01 New York city, March 1, 1869; he practiced his profession three years in Chicago, six years in La Salle, Illinois, and then settled in Iowa City in 1878, and was elected to his present position in the State University, in 1879, as secretary of the medical faculty. He was married September 26, 1871, to Miss Mary A. Brokenshire, of Boston, Massachusetts. A republican in politics. He is a member of the M. E. Church, Beta Theta Pi, A. 0. U. PROF. OMER TOUSEY GILLETT, M. D., of Iowa State University, son of No. 438, p. 159, was born June 28, 1848. Married Sept. 26, 1871, Mary A. Brokenshire, of Boston. Children: 3347, PHILIP LORING GILLETT, b. Oct. 21, 1872. 3348, OMER RAND.b. Nov. 22, 1874. 3349, Susy, b. Jan. 12, 1877. 3350, LEWIS GOODE. b. Aug. 13, 1878.

During the latter part of the late war, Dr. Gillett served as a private in the I32d, Indiana Inf., U. S. A. In 1866, he was graduated from the State University of Indiana with the degree of A. B. The winter of 1867-68, he spent in the Medical College at Ann Arbor, Mich., and the following winter at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York City, graduating there from March, 1860. Since then, his profession has received his entire attention, three years being spent in Chicago, and six in La Salle, 111. In the spring of 1868, he moved to Iowa City, where he has since resided.

In the fall of 1868, he was appointed Assistant to the chair of Surgery, and in the summer following was elected Secretary of the Medical Faculty of the Iowa State University. Obituary, Colorado Springs Gazette, Saturday, Oct. 6, 1894 page 5:1:

"Dr. Omar T. Gillett died in this city yesterday at the age of 49 years. Death resulted from hemorrhage of the lungs and was sudden, although the doctor had been an invalid for many years. His wife was assisting him to dress at the time. Dr. Gillett's death will be learned with regret by everyone who has known him. About 10 years ago his health failed and he came here and since that time he has been a great sufferer. Although his sufferings were intense they were borne patiently and uncomplainingly and his life has been an inspiration to all who knew him. So all, that he could not leave like house most of the time yet he drew to him a host of friends by his noble qualities of mind and heart. Dr. Gillett was a native of Indiana and served through the war. He graduated at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 18__ (1870?). He was rapidly acquiring a high place in the profesion when stricken with the disease which terminated his professional career and ______ his life. Dr. Gillett came here from Iowa City, Ia., where he occupied one of the chairs in the State University. He was especially skillfull as a surgeon. Since coming here the doctor has done considerable literary work and with much success. Dr. Gillett's family consists of his wife, three sons and a daughter, all of them nearly grown. Dr. Gillett's brother, Phillip Gillett is expected her today and the funeral announcement will then be made.

Colorado Springs Gazette, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1894 page 8:1: "The funeral of Dr. O.T. Gillett occurred from the First M.E. Church yesterday morning and was largely attended, many tributes of respect being shown to the deceased physician. The service was conducted by Rev. A.C. Crane, pastor of the church, and Dr. Slocum, president of Colorado College. Profession Phillip Gillett, brother of the deceased, arrived in time to attend the funeral."

"Funeral services Mrs. Gillett will be held this P.M.

"Resident of City since 1886, and Mother of Dr. Gillett, Dies.

"Funeral services for Mrs. Mary A. Gillett, mother of Dr. Omer R. Gillett, city health officer, who died at the home 320 North Cascade avenue, early yesterday morning will be held from the First Methodist church at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon. The Rev. C. H. Wilcox, pastor emeritus of the church and the Rev. S.S. Klyne, pastor will officiate at the services. Mrs. Gillett, who was 75 years old, had been an invalid for several years, being seriously sick only a few weeks, however. Her death was directly due to heart trouble. She came to Colorado Springs from Boston in 1888, accompanying her husband, Dr. Omer T. Gillett, who was ill. He died here in 1894. Altho he was unable to carry his practice here, he was well known. Mrs. Gillett has made an equally large circle of friends during the 37 years of her residence in Colorado Springs in spite of the fact that her health has kept her from many activities. She was a member of the Methodist church and of the various societies of that denomination. Three sons, a daughter and a sister survive. They are Phillip L. Gillett, Y.M.C.A. worked now at Nanking, China, Dr. Omer R. Gillett of this city, Lewis G. Gillett, mining engineers, Mexico and Nevada; Mrs. Susan G. Blair, Taiku, Korea, and Miss Susan Brokenshire, Milton, Mass. Only her sons Omer and Lewis, with his wife, were here when she died. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery."

"Dr. Gillett, City Health Officer, Dies

"Dr. Omer Rand Gillett, pioneer health leader and medical authority of the state, who had been a resident of Colorado Springs for 62 years, died at a local hospital this morning, following an illnes of several weeks. He was 74 years of age. Dr. Gillett was city health officer for 39 years. He was intensely interested in public health problems, placing stress on prevention and keeping abreast of developments in the medical world. He built the Colorado Springs health department into one of the most outstanding in the country. His interest in health and sanitation was instrumental in raising and maintaining standards for milk and domestic water. He gave unceasingly both of his finances and his time to raise the health standards of this community.

"SERVED IN MEDICAL CORPS IN WAR I

"Dr. Gillett held the post of director of public health and sanitation continuously since 1909 with the exception of 15 months during World War I when he was stationed at the Army Medical school in Washington, D.C. While here he met many national celebrities including Robert Lansing, secretary of state in the Woodrow Wilson administration; Ty cobb, one of the greatest baseball players of all time; Branen Rickey, baseball magnate and Eddie Rickenbacker, noted race driver in World War ace aviator. Retired as a captain in the medical corps, in 1919, Dr. Gillett returned to Colorado Springs to resume his work here and again played a leading role in improvement of health conditions in the city and county, particularly in prevention and treatment of diseases in the schools.

"Under Dr. Gillett's regime, the nursing department was added to the health department and changes were made to methods of handling contagious diseases. He was instrumental in the builidng of the contagious disease hospital by the city in 1917, and the county isolation hospital in Bear Creek canon. The son of a physician, he was born November 2, 1874 in La Salle, Ill. He moved with his family to Iowa city, Ia., when he was a small child. The family came to Colorado Springs in February 1888.

"MEMBER OF FIRST FOOTBALL TEAM

"Omer R. Gillett attended public school here and at the age of 17 was a member of the first High school football team organized in the city. He was graduated in 1893 in the first class to be graduated from the senior high school. He then attended Colorado College and was a member of the first Tiger basketball squad, organized in 1897. He was graduated from Colorado College in 1898. As a youth he packed burros in the resort hotel on the south slope of Pikes Peak, operated by Everett and Paul Curtis, located on a claim that included Hart Lake, now known as municipal reservoir No. 5. Burros loaded with supplies, were guided from Colorado Springs to the hotel by Gillett over a trail thru Bear Creek canon. At that time carriages reached the hotel over the old Cheyenne Toll road which later became the Cripple Creek stage road. The log hotel, which was fazed years ago, was a favorite starting place, for persons making the trip to the summit of Pikes Peak by burro.

"After his graduation from Colorado College, Gillett attended the University of Iowa to study medicine. After two years there he entered Jefferson Medical college at Philadelphia where he received his M.D. degree in 1902. For a year he was interne at Jefferson college hospital and then returned to Colorado Springs to enter private practice in 1903.
A man who was always interested in his fellowmen, Dr. Gillett was active in many organizations and had life interests outside the medical profession, ranging to church, sports and philanthropic work. He was a member of the medical staff of Glockner, St. Francis and Beth-El now Memorial hospital; was a past president of the El Paso County medical society, past president of the Solly Tuberculosis society; the Colorado Medical socieity and the American Medical Association. He also belonged to the Colorado Springs Clinical club, the American Health Association and was a past president of the Jefferson Medical alumnar.

"In civic interests he was first president of the Colorado Springs Kiwanis club and the third district governor of the Kiwanis club of Colorado and Wyoming. He was past vice president of of the Winter Night Club, a member of the El Paso club, past exaited ruler of the Elks lodge and past commander of the American Legion. He was a director of the YMCA and a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and belonged to the Methodist church.

"Active in Masonic circles, Dr. Gillett was a member of AF and AM No. 104 was past commander of Knights Templar, and was knight commander of the court of honor, the next highest rank above the 32nd degree Masons. Dr. Gillett made his home at the El Paso club.

"Surviving are a brother, Lewis G. Gillett of Canoga Park, Calif., a well known mining engineer, who mined in Mexico, Peru, the Cripple Creek district, Silverton, Colo., and Nevada; and a sister Mrs. Susan G. Blair, Westbrook Field, Mass., the wife of the Rev. H.E. Blair, a Presbyterian minister who spent 30 years in Korea. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday at the First Methodist church. The Law Mortuary is in charge of arrangements."

Almost as old a resident is Dr. G. W. Fletcher, who came to Orchard forty years ago, and who has practiced there since. He was joined later by his brother Dr. D. L. Fletcher who has practiced with him more than thirty years. Orchard has never had any other physicians.
  
"Doc Gordon," as a youth in his twenties, performed his first major operation--an appendectomy upon a homesteader living in a sod house. The kitchen table served as an operating table and there was no assisting nurse. Forty years later Dr. Fletcher operated upon the same man in the Orchard hospital. J. W.
