He was born at the fort at Cane Ridge and died on his homestead farm at Round Prairie, which was located near Mediapolis. He moved with his parents to Chillicothe, Ohio about 1798. He served in the military in the War of 1812, defending the northern border. He married Margaret Job on 9 May 1816 in Fayette County, Ohio (formed from Ross County in 1819). They migrated to Flat Rock, Indiana and in 1812, they moved on to Morgan County, Illinois and then Pike County in the same state. He was a commissioner for the organization of Schuyler County, Illinois. He and his family were "staunch supporters of the anti-slavery movement." Their last move was in 1834 to Des Moines County, Iowa, where they settled the following spring in Round Prairie. In 1838, he served as a member of the Iowa Territorial Legislature and was an anti-slavey Whig and with the organization of the Republican party "to prevent the extension of slavery", he became a stalwart advocate. He was a farmer according to the various census records.

"Lewis Gillett Dies Suddenly in Santa Barbara

"Lewis Gillett, youngest of the three well known Gillett brothers of Colorado Springs and last surviving one, died Wednesday of a heart attack in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he resided. The word was received this morning by Miss Dora Foster, 1624 W. Cheyenne Rd. Funeral services are to be held in Santa Barbara Friday. Cremation will follow. The ashes will be brought to Colorado Springs for burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Gillett was in his eighties. His brothers were the late Omer Gillett, who was long city physician of Colorado Springs, and Phillip Gillett, a misionary to Japan and Korea, whose widow, Mrs. Bertha Gillett, resides at 119 E. St. Vrain St. Mr. Lewis Gillett was graduated from the Colorado Springs High School in 1897 and was a graduate of Colorado College. He was a mining engineer. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Ayers Gillett, of Santa Barbara, and a younger sister, Mrs. Susie Blair who lives near Santa Barbara."

"Burial Rites Tuesday for Lewis Gillett

"Burial services for Lewis G. Gillett, who died recently in Santa Barbara, Calif., will be held at 10 am Tuesday in Evergreen Cemetery. Dr. Bea F. Lehmberg, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. The Law Mortuary has charge of arrangements. Mr. Gillett was a former resident of Colorado Springs."

Rev. Samuel Trumbull Gillet [Parents] was born 1 on 19 Feb 1809 in Chenango Valley, New York, USA. He died on 23 Aug 1877 in Windsor, Connecticut, USA. Samuel married 1 Harriet Ann Goode on 10 Feb 1831 in Madison, Indiana, USA.

Rev. Samuel Gillet, son of Simeon and Salome Smith Palmer Gillet, was born in New York, 1809. Removed with his parents to Indiana, 1818. Appointed Midshipman, U. S. N., 1826; Passed Midshipman, 1852 ; Lieutenant, 1837. Chaplain, 1841 ; resigned, 1843. Member of Indiana Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, 1837-1885. Married, Feb. 10, 1831, Harriet Ann Goode, born in Warren Co., O., Aug. 24, 1813.

Dr. Gillet emigrated to Indiana with his father's family in 1818. They ascended the Wabash in a family flatboat, propelled by hand, and landed at old Fort Harrison, near the present site of Terre Haute. Appointed Midshipman in 1826, his first cruise was in the U. S. S. Lexington, in the Mediterranean. He passed his examination, graduating at the head of a class of sixty, Raphael Semmes, subsequently Captain of the Confederate cruiser Alabama, standing second, Admirals Dahlgren, Glisson, Rowan and Briggs, being also members. A second cruise in the Mediterranean, and a visit to the Holy Land, gave rise to religious impressions which changed the whole tenor of his life, and in 1837, being at that time a Lieutenant, he resigned his commission, and became a Methodist Minister, and for nearly fifty years has faithfully pursued his calling. In 1841, he was appointed Chaplain in the Navy, and was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for a few months, but soon resigned. In 1848, he was acting president of the Whitewater College, in 1841, declined the presidency of the Fort Wayne Female College to which he had been elected. Has several times been a delegate tu the General Conference of the church.
    
He is a man of deep learning, and refined traits, and his wife is one of the noblest of women.

Dr. Gillet is descended in the sixth degree from Jonathan Gillet who came to America in 1630, in. the ship "Mary and John," and settled first at Dorchester, Mass., then at Windsor, Conn., where he died Aug. 23, 1877. He has published a "Genealogical Record of Simeon Gillet, Sr.," his great-grandfather, in broadside, lithographed, Indianapolis, 1876.

Huldah Loring "Holda" Rand [Parents] was born 1 on 3 Mar 1821 in Vermont, USA. She died about 1889. Holda married 2 John Brokenshire 3 on 25 Jun 1846 in Milton, Massachusetts, USA.

Holda worked 3 as Grocery Store in 1860 in Cleveland, Cuyhoga County, Ohio, USA. She resided 1 in 1870 in Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA.

The 1900 census lists Martha Rand, a single woman, living with two nieces and her grand-nephew. The nieces are both single as well: Elizabeth Frye and Susan R. Brokenshire, the daughter of Holda. The grand nephew was Philip Loring Brokenshire, son of Holda. And note also that Holda's second son is named Omer Rand.
