Jim's Autobiography Brief

Inspired by the famous radio team of Bob & Ray, Jim Kirby wrote and produced his first radio spot at the age of 15. It was for a cake sale at New Rochelle High School, and it was aired over the PA system. The cake sale was a huge success. In fact, the brownies, which were featured in the spot, sold out! Kirby became an overnight success.

Kirbys burgeoning radio career was put on hold while he barely graduated from Fordham University, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany where he soared to the rank of PFC.

In 1965, Jim Kirby joined radio station WSPR in Springfield, Massachusetts, as Sales Manager. In the next ten years, he wrote and produced around a million radio spots for local clients and, at the same time, freelanced for advertising agencies in New York and Boston.

In 1975, Kirby moved to Los Angeles in order to concentrate on radio commercial production and soon after teamed up with Alan Barzman & Company. Together Barz & Kirby created and produced about a million or so radio spots.

In 1982, Bert Bardis left Dick and Bert, and Bert, Barz & Kirby was formed.

In 1987, Kirby was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Creative Excellence by the Association of National Advertisers and the Radio Advertising Bureau, along with Stan Freeberg, Stiller & Meara, Dick Orkin and Chuck Blore, and his boyhood idols Bob & Ray.

In 1988, after 6 years and another million-ish radio spots, Kirby left Bert, Barz & Kirby and formed his own production company, Jim Kirby & Company. At this point, he has no intention of leaving himself. Jim Kirby & Company has been honored many times, close to a million, by all of the major ad award contests.

In between his first spot (for the cake sale) and his last spots (for Pepsi) Kirby has created and produced, and voiced around 100,000 radio spots (give or take) for 10,000 (give or take) ad agencies/clients.

He still writes, produces, and voices radio & TV spots and looks forward to another cake sale spot.

Jim Kirby has no outside interests.
