Calvinball

As you can see, we like to refer to a line's from The Calvin and Hobbes 10th Anniversary Book, in which Bill Watterson writes, "People have asked how to play Calvinball.  It's pretty simple; you make up the rules as you go."  With that statement in mind, we'd like to refer you to Picture-1 (A.k.a P-1), in which Calvin states the only permanent rule of Calvinball:  "The only permanent rule in Calvin is you can't play the same way twice!"  And so, as you read through the temporary rules (which would probably be better described as "occurrences") of Calvinball that we've picked out, its important to remember that any and all rules of Calvinball can be changed or deleted by all players involved.

Rules:  Any player can declare a new rule at any point in the game. (See P-2 and Zones)  The rule can effect any player involved, be positive or negative, make sense or make no sense.  New rules will take effect once they are said out loud, or thought (depending on the zone the rule making player inhabits).

Masks:  Unless otherwise stated, all players must where masks. This rule will never be otherwise stated, because, "No one's allowed to question the masks." (See P-3)
The "Calvinball":  Players may use a "Calvinball."  The Calvinball may be a Soccer Ball, a Volley Ball, or any other type of ball with the Football  because games of Football often morph into games of Calvinball, and when this happens the Football is replaced by some other type of ball (See P-4).  The Calvinball may be used in anyway a player sees fits, or, may not be used at all.

Songs:  Songs are sung throughout Calvinball.  There is an official Calvinball song which is goes as follows:

The Official Calvinball Song
Other kids games are all such a bore!
They gotta have rules and they gotta keep score!
Calvinball is better by far!
It's never the same!  It's always bizarre.
You don't need a team or a referee!
You know that it's great, 'cause its named after me!
If you wanna...

Um. Feel free to join in with Hobbes on the Rum-a-tum-tum's

Songs can also be administered to opponents as a penalty.  For instance, if a player is tagged in the Song Zone with the Calvinball, they have to sing the "I'm Very Sorry Song." (See P-5 and zones)

Calvinball field:  Calvinball can be played on any field, however, big, grassy fields with many obstacles are preferable.   The field is divided into an infinite number of Zones, declared by the players before or during the game. (See P-6)  The name of the Zones should reflect what they require of the player.  The "Corollary Zone," for instance, allows any player to add a sub rule to any rule already made.
Flags:  Flags are often used in Calvinball.  Flags are named by by the player possessing them, who also decide the effect of the flag.  Flags can also be carried around for no particular reason, just to look cool I guess.
Zones:  Zones are used...you know even I don't know. Oh well I'll try.
The zones are in Calvinball because ,Well, Where would Bill be if there was no "Pernicious Poem Place" (See Below.) or "Bag Flag Zone"?

Just remember: Do NOT use the rules up there! I repeat: Do NOT use the rules up there!
