The B.E.T.H. Foundation realizes the need for an improved Driver Education experience in the state of Indiana. We believe this can happen by establishing a Graduated License law and by implementing Driving Simulators into the Indiana school system.

Graduated Drivers License Program

What is graduated driver licensing? Basically, it’s a program that allows new drivers to gradually progress in their driving privileges based on their level of driving experience.

Typically, this occurs in a three-stage process with varying levels of supervision.

  1. Supervised learner’s period
  2. Intermediate license allowing for some unsupervised driving
  3. Full-privilege license

The goal is to give new drivers vital on-the-road experience in a controlled, lower-risk setting. Studies show that there has been a 5-16% reduction in accidents reported from states with a Graduated License program.

Some Graduated Drivers License Guidelines include:

  • Adult supervision for a period of time
  • No passengers for 90 days
  • Cannot drive past a set curfew (some exceptions apply)
  • Seat belts must be worn at all passengers
  • Probationary until 18 years old
  • Lose your license if you have 2 accidents or moving violations or a combination of the two

Driving Simulators Pilot Program

The B.E.T.H. Foundation is working to establish a pilot program of driving simulators that can be offered to schools that cannot afford to purchase their own simulators. We believe these simulators can fill a void currently being experienced by teen drivers. The intended result: lower teen accident rates and safer roads.

Within this pilot program, The B.E.T.H. Foundation would track the driving records of the participants throughout their high school years. If using the simulators can be shown to reduce teen accidents, we believe parents would be willing to pay an additional cost for the use of the simulators if their insurance premium rates could be reduced.

If you believe in the Driving Simulator and Graduated Licensing Program, please let us know! We appreciate your feedback and support.
