Intarsia is the cutting of wood into pieces, then anrranging them together like a puzzle to make up a picture. Most times  different colors of wood are used, but a single wood can also be used, then each piece is painted before putting them in place to make the picture.

This boat was made from 7 different types of wood. 53 individual hand cut and shaped pieces. It is approximately 17 inches high and 3/4 inch thick. All pieces glued to a 1/4 inch plywood backing. No dyes or stains. All natural wood colors. Finished with 5 coats of shellac.

This light house was also cut from one type of wood. It is about 12 inches high by 15 wide. I lost track of how many pieces but a lot.

firedragon.jpg

A fire breathing Dragon of 215 hand cut and formed pieces. 20 1/2 inches wide and 21 1/2 high. Thickness range from 5/8 to 1 3/8. Woods used is padauk, blood wood, red oak, chestnut, red cedar, maple, poplar and yellow heart. Finished with three coats of Crystal Clear. A very long time will pass before I do another one this big. Time enough for me to forget how labor intensive it was. Also I need time to forget how many four letter words I used to complete it.
