Kamishibai
Japanese Storytelling with Mr. Who?
Duke University’s Institute of Asian Pacific Studies hired me to tell a traditional Japanese folktale in the style called Kamishibai (paper, theater) when Allen Say came to read and sign copies of his children’s book, Kamishibai Man at the Regulator Bookshop in Durham, NC. It went over so well, I created the Kamishibai character, Mr. Who?, bought an old bicycle and re-created the image of the Kamishibai Man for storytelling sessions in schools, dojos, teacher trainings and conferences throughout North Carolina.
