Stephen Chow Sing-Chi

Stephen Chow Sing-Chi is Asia's Number One box office attraction.  He is an actor, director, producer, and writer whose 2004 film "Kung Fu Hustle" broke box office records all across Asia. "Kung Fu Hustle" beat out 2003's box office winner "Shaolin Soccer" - which he also starred in, wrote, directed, and produced.  "Kung Fu Hustle" won the 24th Annual Hong Kong Film Award for Best Picture and "Shaolin Soccer" won Best Picture at the 21st Annual Kong Film Awards. Stephen Chow also won Best Director for "Shaolin Soccer" the same year at the HKFA.

"Kung Fu Hustle" opened in the United States in wide release on April 22, 2005. In its first weekend it earned $US 7.5 million and came in fifth in box office receipts. Not a bad first weekend!

I had the opportunity to see "Kung Fu Hustle" at a special screening before it even opened in Hong Kong.  It is an homage to the old Kung Fu movies of the 60's and 70's with a dose of comedy and computer effects thrown in for good measure.  If you get a chance to see it I highly recommend it!

Check out the movie's official website - it has great downloads and photos.

Shaolin Soccer

"Shaolin Soccer" was widely thought to be Stephen Chow's big ticket to the US market.  Miramax dropped the ball (no pun intended!) when handling it though.  After a round of indecision about whether to release it dubbed or subtitled they decided on dubbed (although Stephen Chow dubbed the voice in English for his character) and with a "funk" music soundtrack instead of the original songs by Andy Lau. Stephen Chow was reportedly disappointed with the handling of the movie and even inserted a scene in "Kung Fu Hustle" where his character squashes a soccer ball and declares "No more soccer!".

Favorite Movie

My favorite Stephen Chow movie is actually two movies.  "A Chinese Odyssey Part 1 - Pandora's Box " and the sequel "A Chinese Odyssey Part 2 - Cinderella" follow the adventures of the  classic Chinese folk character, Monkey King.  In addition to playing Monkey King, Chow plays plays Joker, a thief who comes to realize that he is the Monkey King reincarnated. As Joker, Chow has some great classic comedic scenes. As Monkey King he shows his versatility as an actor with dramatic moments. Stephen Chow won the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Best Actor award for his roles.
