History of our Group...

Five little words.... that was the response a neighbor gave Joan to a question that she posed to her. Five little words that changed her life and affected the lives of fourteen (and counting) other women. Her question had been simple enough: "Do you know of any meditation groups that meet during the day?" Joan knew her neighbor meditated so this was a logical question. But the response she gave her that day, those five little words, caused her to first laugh and then exclaim, "Oh sure, right!"  Her response was: "Why don't you start one?"  And, that is just what Joan did. The first meeting of our group, which we call the Mid Morning Meditators, was on May 29, 2000. The neighbor and friend of Joan's, Lynn Marie, promised to kick off the group if Joan actually started one. Always true to her word, Lynn Marie was the first, and a continuing favorite, presenter. With ten women in attendance, we held our first meeting at the Bristol Public Library. Lynn Marie taught us a welcoming song, which we still use to open every meeting. In fact, it has become a very meaningful ritual for us. That first meeting, where we got to sample different meditation techniques, set a very high standard for us. It left us feeling uplifted, curious and eager for more!
The last line of our welcoming song, "All manner of good things will come to us now," is exactly what has happened to our group. The resources in our area were such a pleasant surprise. Since Joan is a retired school teacher who missed her lesson plan book, the group let her make the calls and set the schedule. She found it easier than she could imagine to find knowledgeable and willing speakers. We thought we might have enough presenters for three to six months of learning the meditation techniques. It seems now in 2003, that the resources are inexhaustible! Once she explained the nature and purpose of our group, presenters were eager to meet with us. It has always worked for each of us to contribute $5 each session to cover the basic expenses of each presenter. Most of our meetings are held at the local library but we have had many other venues as well. See the archives section of this web site to see the variety of presentations that we have had to date. Also, be sure to read the schedule of future presentations.
