Lutes Family

Carl has spent most of his life in the arts, pursuing careers in both English and music -- as a member of the SIU English Department for five years, as a teacher in Christopher, his hometown, and in New York City. He has also been principal flutist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Longines Symphonette, a national radio orchestra, and concertized throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as personal flutist with Metropolitan opera star Roberta Peters. In 1962, he made an interesting tour of the Soviet Union in an orchestra sponsored by the State Department, unexpectedly finding himself in Moscow during the Cuban missile crisis.
Carl enrolled at SIU, then Southern Illinois Normal University, before graduating from high school. World War II was raging and all males were expected to do military service; so after a year at SIU, he left for the Navy, playing in the Navy band in Washington, D.C., before assignment to the battleship, USS Washington. After the war, he returned to SIU to finish his bachelor’s degree, then off to Columbia University for a master’s degree in music and further graduate study at the Paris Conservatory and the Sorbonne, where he received degrees in Flute and French Language and Culture.
During his studies at SIU, Carl was granted a university scholarship. In gratitude, he has established endowed scholarships for a deserving student from his hometown and for exceptional students in the fields of music and English. In 1957 at the “Music under the Stars Festival” at McAndrew Stadium, Lutes was featured as Honored Southern Illinois Musician.
Carl is a two-degree SIU graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a Master’s degree in 1959. He taught English at SIU Carbondale. He moved to New York City (Manhattan) where he taught English at a private girls school. He retired to Somers, NY and later moved back to Carbondale, IL.

John William LUTES (son of Cyrus LUTES & Louisa ROBERTS) was born on 14 Jan 1860 in Adair County, Missouri. He was raised in West Virginia, lived in Christopher, IL for a few years, then moved to California where he died on 16 Nov 1937. He is buried in California. He worked as a house carpenter while in Christopher, IL (1920 Census).
John married Luvina Jane TAYLOR, daughter of (first name unknown) TAYLOR and (first name unknown) MARTIN, on 22 Jun 1882 in Marshall County, WV. Luvina was born on 10 Jan 1863 in Marshall County, WV. She died on 11 Dec 1946 in Orange County, California. She is buried in California. John & Luvina had the following children.

Charles Walker "Charlie" LUTES (son of Cyrus LUTES & Louisa ROBERTS) was born on 25 Apr 1867 on Taylor's Ridge in Marshall County, WV. He died on 2 Nov 1956 in Christopher, IL. He is buried in Knob Prairie Cemetery in Eastern Township (Aiken) in Franklin County, IL. Most genealogy sites list his birth month as May. They did this because the West Virginia Birth Register for 1867 has ditto marks in place of his birth month and the birth month for the person listed above him is listed as May. However, Charlie always insisted he was born in April. His 1900 Census record also lists his birth month as April. His cemetery marker indicates that he was born in 1869. However, the West Virginia birth records indicate that he was born in 1867. His age on the 1870 Census (age 3) and 1880 Census (age 13) in West Virginia are consistent with his having been born in 1867. He could read, write, and speak English. While living in Marshall County, WV, he was a laborer on the railroad and rented a farm. While in Christopher, IL he was a laborer and served as the City's Chief of Police and Fire Chief. Charlie married Sarah Belle BENNETT on 21 Jun 1894 in Moundsville, WV. The marriage ended in divorce on 15 Feb 1905. Belle was born in Jun 1874 in Powhatan Point, Ohio. Charlie & Belle had the following child.

Charles W. "Peanuts" LUTES. He is a fraternal twin with Carl. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. After the War, Charles was a truck driver for the Bione & Centralia trucking companies. He began volunteering for the Christopher Fire Department in the 1960's. In 1986, he was appointed the Fire Chief for which he served for about 30 years. Charles married Loretta Emma MANGIN, daughter of Jake MANGIN & Minnie WENDLING, on 19 Apr 1950. She was born on 3 Sep 1927 in Du Quoin, IL and died on 3 May 2015 in Carbondale, IL. She is buried in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Du Quoin, IL. She worked as a seamstress in Du Quoin. Charles & Loretta lived in Christopher, IL. They had no children.
