Onslaught ends EI Kids season

Submitted by:  Wade Moore

Sunday October 28th saw the 4th week of SIPA competition! The Carterville Evil Intent Kids (0-3) were looking to end the season on a high note against the (2-1) Marion Onslaught team. The Kids have been improving big time over the course of the season and had a spark plug playing for them in Sean Chester for this match up. Marion Onslaught was coming off of a hard fought, heart breaking overtime loss to the Harrisburg Hitmen and needed to win to even have a chance at a title in 2007.

This was the first time the field was set up with one side visibly harder to navigate and that side would take a lot of thought on how to run it correctly. The first half had the Kids starting on the harder side of the field and it was very testing for them. Marion Onslaught took advantage of this and took a 3-0 by halftime.

The Kids team came back in the second half from the better side and stopped Onslaught on their first offensive possession and then scored on their first offensive try in the third quarter. The rest of the way was dominated by the defenses with only Onslaught scoring in the 4th quarter and the match ended 4-1 in favor of Marion Onslaught.

With the loss, Carterville Evil Intent Kids fall to a hard and valiant fought 0-4 for the season. The team of Nick Kelley and Kyle McCann came on strong this season and played well enough to win a match if they could have had a steady third player to compliment them.

With the win Marion Onslaught improves to 2-1 and is still alive for a title, but it will take a win over the veteran Carterville Evil Intent team and a Harrisburg Hitmen loss.

Evil Intent takes out the Hitmen

This match was a battle of the unbeaten as both teams came in with 2-0 records.  The Hitmen were coming off of a thriller overtime match against Onslaught in which they pulled out a win and Evil Intent is coming off of their bye week.  So we would see if the rested team could out slug the Hitmen coming off of such an emotional win.

The match started with the Hitmen choosing the harder side of the field so they would know how many points they would need to score in the second half.  Evil Intent took quick advantage of this and scored a point with only 10 seconds left on the play clock to lead 1-0 early on.  Then the defenses took over; back and forth the teams battled with no scores.  Finally the Hitmen broke through and tied it at 1-1.  But Evil came right back with their next possession and scored before halftime and led 2-1 at the break.

The season so far has shown that the Evil Intent team knows how to play defense and on the harder side of the field that showed for them.  The Hitmen came back and scored in the 3rd quarter to tie it 2-2.

The 4th quarter was a battle as both teams were trying to bunker and flank each other every game point.  Finally as Evil pushed two to the snake side on one Hitman player, one of them pushed on through to try a flanking move and got eliminated right before he cleared the Hitman’s bunker.  He kept running as the ref motioned an eliminated player but had his gun down and ran on out of bounds.  The ref that was calling the elimination was behind the Hitman player and the player could not see the elimination being called and when he kept yelling for a call he then could not hear the ref saying the elimination and while this all happened, the second Evil snake player ran on by the Hitman player and slid into the endzone for a score and a 3-2 lead for Carterville Evil intent.  The next possessions were hard battles and ran the clock out with a 3-2 win secured for the Carterville Evil Intent team.

Both teams suffered gun and paint problems but still played a great game.  Now all Carterville Evil Intent need to do is beat Marion Onslaught and the 2007 Gurnsey Cup is theirs.  A loss by Evil Intent and a win by the Hitmen would result in a three way for the title.  A playoff would then be needed to determine the champion for 2007.
