SIPA Finally Crowns 2007 League Champions

It took six extra months to crown the first ever Southern Illinois Paintball Association league champions, but it was
well worth the wait!
To refresh everyone’s memory, the 2007 season ended in a three way tie for first place between the Harrisburg
Hitmen, Carterville Evil Intent, and Marion Onslaught all finishing with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. With no common tie breaker to determine a winner, the season had to go into a playoff overtime!
The Hitmen had an advantage of experience as two of their regular season matches went into extra session with the Hitmen
coming out on top in both. It was decided that we would play it out the same
way college football plays their overtime games. Each team gets a chance to score
and then they would have to prevent the other team from scoring to win it all.
The six month lay off between the regular season and the championship playoff match did have a serious effect on Marion
Onslaught. They experienced a team melt down in the off season. One member got out of the sport by selling all of his equipment without letting his teammates know about
his plans, another member is currently facing some personal health issues, and their two alternates decided not to play at
all. This left them unable to field a team for the championship. It’s shocking for a team to fold having a championship within reach, but it happens. Just ask Excessive of the NPPL.

So with Onslaught out of the running this left Carterville Evil Intent to go against the Harrisburg Hitmen for the
title. The regular season meeting between these two teams ended with an Evil
win scoring 4 – 3 over the Hitmen. The Hitmen were out to redeem themselves
against a solid EI squad as they felt they had made a couple of mistakes against Evil in their first meeting. Evil Intent had only lost to Marion Onslaught in the regular season in an equally close score of 4 –
5 and was eager to prove they could beat the Hitmen again.
The field was set up different this time as it was lengthened, the air-ball bunkers were removed and only solid bunkers
were put in their place. All the bunkers were mirrored with each side having
bunkers placed in the same place on both sides of the field. The only difference
between these sides was that the south end of the field is slightly higher in elevation than the north end.
Before the match both teams and all the refs met in the center of the field for their final instructions and prayer. Team captains Travis Brandon (Evil Intent) and David Morse (Hitmen) met for the coin toss.
Travis won the right to make the call and called tails… the coin landed on heads.
The Hitmen chose to take the flag first so Evil Intent got to pick which end they wanted to start at, they chose the
south (higher elevation) end. With those decisions over it was finally time to
get down to business.

Out of the gate it appeared both teams timing was off and they also seemed like they were playing not to lose instead
of playing to win. Both defenses ruled the match as the offenses just played
too timidly. Evil Intent stopped the Hitmen with their first flag possession
and the Hitmen returned the favor when Evil had the flag from the top. The teams
then switched ends of the field. Again, the defenses were just too strong and
stopped the offenses. Evil Intent took the snake a couple of times but just could
not push through the Hitmen’s sharp shooting to score a point. Every time
it looked like the Hitmen were on their heels they would either hold or make timely shots to stop the Evil push.
Still with no scores the teams switched ends of the field again, the Hitmen were on the low North end of the field
and Evil Intent took the high ground. This time in the Hitmen huddle, captain
David Morse
was heard saying, “No more sitting! We are going to push and push. We will
either push into the endzone for the score on this possession or this will be a quick win for Evil.” When the whistle blew the Hitmen got the Evil’s snake side tape man out on the break and that was
all they needed. They started their push up the center and eliminated another
Evil player. Then the center man and tape criss-crossed their next moves and
the center man (now right tape man) ran up the sidelines for a simultaneous elimination with the last remaining Evil Intent
player. This allowed the Hitmen to cross the goal line for the matches first
score. Now all they had to do was hold Evil from scoring and they would be the
champions.
Back at the staging tents, the Hitmen were relieved to have finally scored and glad their game plan worked. Captain Morse commended his squad for executing his plan in a big way, however he reminded his players
not to get over confident and that Evil did beat them in the regular season. He
also told his players that there was a reason Evil Intent was in the championship match so they should respect that. Over in the Evil camp the mood was tense and concerned but yet still confident they
could come out on top. They knew however, that they had to score on the next
flag possession to keep their title hopes alive. Anything less and the Hitmen
would own the first SIPA championship.
When the whistle blew to start the next game, Evil Intent was throwing a ton of paint trying for a quick elimination,
but it was not to be as the Hitmen made sure they took cover. The Hitmen knew
that all they had to do was stay in to win. It was Evil that had the task of
bringing it to the Hitmen this time in order to keep their championship dreams from slipping through their fingers.

Evil did what they had to do, and that was make moves, advance downfield, and put pressure on the Hitmen. However, their timing was still off and they still could not get two guns to focus on a Hitman player to
get an elimination. Time was ticking away on the play clock and Travis Brandon
of Evil Intent starting making his move. Josh of EI also advanced down the snake. Travis kept the heat on the Hitmen’s left tape man and took him out. But it was too little too late as the Hitmen took out Evil Intents left tape and center man during their
push. This left the flag lying out in the open in the center of the field, leaving
Josh with the task of running out in the open to get it and then making a mad dash for the endzone to score. This was not to be as the two remaining Hitmen kept Josh at bay as the time ran out on Evil’s championship
hopes.
After a defensive seesaw battle the match and the championship was the Harrisburg Hitmen’s. It was a well played game with both captains calling a good game.
It was a shame to see one of these teams come up short. Thanks go out
for a good championship day to all the refs and players that made this day go off without a hitch.
Now that the inaugural 2007 season has crowned it champions, the 2008 season is right around the corner. The SIPA welcomes two new teams for 2008, Anna Urban Assault, and Johnston City Unholy Alliance. Now is the time to contact the league if you have a team that wants in, or a player looking for a team
to join, so don’t let your opportunity slip by.
Congratulations
to all of the 2007 players and teams, and a special congratulations to our 2007 SIPA Gurnsey cup champions the Harrisburg
Hitmen, David Morse,
Carl Brasher, and Dustin Morse.
