Daniel John Kok, age 52, died at his home in Custer on Saturday, November 4, 2006, after bravely enduring ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) for five months.

Dan leaves behind his wife of nearly 30 years, Kathleen (Laninga), children Heather and Kyle Tiersma and James Kok, grandchildren Kendell, Tyrel, and Julia Tiersma, all of Custer, parents Chaplain Louis and Frances (Burghgraef) Kok (Lynden), brothers and sisters Mavis and Randy Moon (San Jose, CA), Joel and Tricia Kok (Broomall, PA), and Janette Kok (Lynden), Herman and Ali Laninga (Bellingham), Nick and Diana Laninga (Lynden), Dick and Cheryl Laninga (Grand Rapids, MI), and fifteen nieces and nephews, plus their spouses and children.

He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Klaas and Jean Laninga.

Born in Bellingham (Lynden) on February 2, 1954, Dan grew up in many states (Washington, Michigan, Alaska, Florida, and Texas), through the course of his dad's Air Force career. Returning to Lynden for his junior and senior years of high school, Dan graduated from Lynden Christian High School in 1972.

He spent a year or two in Phoenix, Arizona, before returning to Whatcom County, where he lived first in Lynden, then in Custer. Dan married Kathleen Laninga on December 30, 1976.

Dan was a hard worker all his life, starting as a paper boy in grade school, having various jobs during and after high school, including at Van Zanten's and De Wilde's Nurseries, and ultimately working at Intalco for 32 years, from 1974 until he was diagnosed with ALS in May 2006.

Dan made many good friends at Intalco, who supported and visited him in his illness. In addition to his Intalco job, Dan and Kathy farmed in Custer, raising dairy replacement heifers. Dan served on the Ebenezer Christian School Board during their building program in the early 90s. He pursued his own education and received an AA degree from Whatcom Community College, graduating Phi Theta Kappa in December 2005.

Dan enjoyed horseback riding with his good friend Bernie Tiersma, and both families often camped together at Silver Lake Horse Camp. Dan took pleasure in time with his family, both immediate and extended. He was a faithful husband, caring father, helpful son, and generous brother.

He was a member of Hope in Christ Church in Bellingham, where he was starting to serve in their Friendship Ministry to disabled adults just before his illness struck.

Facing his ALS diagnosis with courage and strong spirit, Dan made new friends in the Evergreen Chapter of the ALS Association. He spoke with gratitude of the love shown him by family members, including aunts, uncles, and cousins, friends, co-workers, church members, especially Pastor Gordon Terpstra, doctors, in particular Dr. Patti Brettell, hospice workers, and volunteers in his final months. He learned how loving Kathy could be as she tirelessly and tenderly took care of him until she held his hand as he drew his final breath.

Dan was a friendly, outgoing, caring, and generous man, who lived out his Christian faith in his home, workplace, school, and community. His family and many, many friends will miss him. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (II Corinthians 12:9).
