Playtron Candy Deep-V

The "Candy" was the first R/C boat I ever received. It was an 8th grade graduation gift back in 1987. It came with a Futaba pistol grip AM transmitter. I even built a trailer for it so I could tow it around with my Tamiya Falcon. The Falcon is long gone but the trailer is still around. There's even recent video with my kid's R/C truck towing it to the lake!
I updated and upgraded the boat in 2019 with the Hobbywing QuicRun WP-1060 (60-amp brushed) electronic speed control; a Dynamite 20-turn 540 brushed motor and a Flysky receiver to work with my Flysky FS-GT5 transmitter.

Here are links to the upgrade videos. They will open in a new window:

Playtron "Candy" fast electric (original paint scheme)

Playtron "Candy" fast electric with some upgrades. I custom painted it probably 2 years after I got it.

Original R/C install with mechanical speed control and 4 AA battery pack for servos (1987 - 2019).

Modified and updated R/C install with electronic speed control (2019 - present).

Sterling Models Racing Runabout

This is the 29" long, approximately 1/8 scale, Sterling Models Dual-Cockpit Mahogany Runabout.
It is modeled after the 19 foot Chris-Craft Racing Runabout which you can see on page 5 of their 1954 catalog available online at Mahogany Bay
This was my first all wood model built from the keel up...literally!!!

Here is the link to the upgrade video. It will open in a new window: Sterling Models 1/8 scale Racing Runabout gets an ESC and passengers

The first image below is the original R/C setup from 1994 - 2020 with a "mechanical" speed control with a separate resistor I had to put behind the rear seat (it's shown pulled out of its original mounted location in the stern). It also had a 4 AA battery pack for the servos.

Updated R/C install with electronic speed control (2020 - present).

Pro Boat Valvryn 25" F1 Tunnel Hull

I replaced the stock outdrive with the "Dragon Hobby RC BOAT CNC 45° OUTBOARD DRIVE UNIT HARDWARE W/servo mount (M10041036)" and I was only able to find it from an online shop called Monkey Hobby. As of 2022, it appears to be discontinued. TFL makes a similar unit available through Offshore Electrics and Monkey Hobby.

The following replacement/upgrade parts I bought from Offshore Electrics:

Pro Boat Valvryn with upgraded Outboard Drive Unit, 1st run of 2022 (Mar. 2022)
Pro Boat Valvryn gets new 60A ESC with upgraded Outboard Drive Unit, 2nd run of 2022 (Apr. 2022)
Pro Boat Valvryn additional upgrades and repairs (Oct. 2022)

This is my first, and so far only, tunnel hull boat. It has a self-righting feature.

Pro Boat Sonicwake 36" v1 Deep-V

This is one of my least favorite boats. I tried many times to get it to run well on 6S (22.2V) as it is intended and spent more time recovering it and fixing broken parts than actually running it.
Now it runs only on 4S (14.8V). It still doesn't run well but at least it doesn't flip and break anymore!

Here's a video running on 4S. It will open in a new window: Pro Boat Sonicwake on 4-cell ... because it runs HORRIBLE on 6-cell

Upgrades and replacements include: dual water pick-up rudder; heavy-duty prop shaft; trim tab adjusters and smaller 43mm dia. x 1.4 pitch CNC prop

Pro Boat Blackjack 24" Catamaran

I bought this used. It's missing some stock stickers and the ESC did not work when I got it. I replaced the ESC with a Turnigy 90A ESC; upgraded the strut so I could install a standard 3/16"prop shaft and flex cable. I also replaced the stock Dynamite 3650 2000KV brushless motor with a Rocket RC 3660 2600KV brushless motor.

Here's a video before the motor upgrade. It will open in a new window: Pro Boat Blackjack 24 – new to us intro and upgrades

This is my first, and so far only, catamaran boat. It doesn't self right and you can't drive it when it's windy, so it doesn't get much run time.

Pro Boat 17-inch Power Boat Racer Deep-V (Lucas Oil)

This was also used, but all the electronics worked and it came with the stock battery. I had to replace a missing drive shaft part along with the universal joint. This is small, self-righting and a real handful to drive. But it's fun!

Here's a video of it running. It will open in a new window: Pro Boat Lucas Oil 17-inch Power Boat Racer - July 2023 at the lake

Pro Boat Jet Jam 12" Pool Racer

This is a fun little boat for the pool and really shallow water since it doesn't have a prop and rudder. It uses a steerable impeller drive.
It also makes a good recovery boat with the included "basket" attached to the bow.

Here's a video of it running. It will open in a new window: Pro Boat Jet Jam first runs and our impressions of this unique R/C boat

Emma C. Berry

Here's a R/C Boat project, the Emma C. Berry, a classic sailing Schooner.
It's another Sterling Models kit. The real boat sits in the Mystic, CT seaport.
My second all wood model built from the keel up, but my first sailing vessel of any kind!!!

The first picture shows what she'll look like when she's done, per the box.
The other picture is the hull (as much as I've completed so far anyway!)
This is still the current condition of the boat, just part of the hull since the late 1990s
