The Knights
of Columbus is a fraternal order of Catholic men dedicated to works of charity, fraternity, and brotherly love.
The Knights
of Columbus, St. Vincent DePaul Council, #4404 held its first
meeting, under charter, on April 14, 1957, in John VanLeeuwen’s Town Pub in Sparta. The original membership totaled 52. For many years, they met in the basement of Holy Family Church in Sparta. The Council raised money and began construction of a new hall on the
east side of 32nd Avenue, between Gooding and Coolidge Streets, in Chester Township. They moved into the new hall in September, 1971.
Since that time, additions and improvements have been made, the first in 1987 and the last in 1997.
The K of C Hall is used by
its membership for meetings and other activities. They hold a new year’s
eve dinner dance and other dances throughout the year, weekly euchre parties, pancake breakfasts during lent, and horseshoe
tournaments during good weather. A
senior citizen dinner is held there every Monday at noon. The Chester Township Fire Department holds a pancake breakfast there each year on the Sunday before Memorial Day. The Council also rents the hall for wedding receptions and other parties.
