The fourth and only existing
post office in the township opened in the village of
West Chester on June 2, 1887. The post office acquired its name from the railroad
station that had opened the preceding year. Shortly after the post office opened,
O. F. Conklin traveled to Washington, D.C.
to request that the name be changed to Conklin. The government granted Mr. Conklin’s
request and the name was changed before then end of the year.

The Conklin Post Office had two routes: one south of Harding Street and one north of Harding Street. As the area grew, a third route was added. The routes were
reduced from three to two when the automobile replaced the horse and buggy as the mode of transportation. The routes served much of Chester Township and portions of Polkton, Ravenna, and Wright Townships.
