Brief Background of the family:

Mr Shahidul Islam (nickname Lalu and commonly known as Lalu) was a freedom fighter and hero who was awarded ‘Vir Protik’ after the liberation war. He was the youngest freedom fighter (he was 12 in 1971) who achieved this great honor title of our nation. He fought under Kader Siddiqui in greater Tangail-Modhupur region. Since he was illiterate, after liberation he did not even know that he was awarded ’Vir Protik’.

Since independence of Bangladesh, he has been surviving working part time here and there. He worked as ’word boy’ in Tangail hospital.  After tragic assassination of great leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15th August 1975, he was on the run because he was known as member of “Kaderia bahini”. He worked as the station porter, glass boy of restaurants and sometimes cook. In his final days he worked as a cook in a restaurant and left his beloved land in May 25’09 in Dhaka Medical College due to failure of both kidneys.

He did not get that assistance from the government other than the title. He was given a shelter in Muktijoddha Complex in Mirpur where he had been living with his family since he married Mala Begum of Munshigonj. The family were blessed with 4 children— two boys and two girls.

When elder son was contacted by one of our Ankur BoD and told him how proud they should be for their father, it appeared to him as joke since the poor hero could not even send his sons to school and provide them the much needed regular meals.

Current Condition:

The oldest of the children is their daughter who got married. Second child is of age 17-18 and did not get a chance to finish his school. He is currently working in a driving training school and barely earns 100 Taka per day. Looks like he is the only earning member of this family. Youngest two children are in grade 5 and 2 and some how managing to continue their education.

The family is living in a shanty house standing on bamboo pillars with 4/5 rooms. The worst part is even though they are living in this house for so many years, government never officially handed the document of this house to them. It adds some uncertainty on the future of this shelter.

Immediate Challenges:

With help of a patriot from Rajshahi (who is proud mother of one of our Ankur BoD) and a BUET chemical engineering Professor and his team, we located this family and came to know about their current miserable situation. Their immediate need is to fix the house so that they can live there and they may be able to rent 2/3 rooms of this house for Tk1000 (one thousand).

What we are thinking:

Can we immediately help her fix the house so that she can live there and rent the extension for some fixed income? We have to come up with some plan to have her two kids’ continue the school. Is there a way for the older kid to restart his education in night school? With time progressing we may know better about their situation and needs and act as situation demands.

Work In Progress:
Dr. Munsur and Dr. Shaukat are working together to help this family. Graduate students working with Dr. Munsur are doing an excellent job of renovating the house the family lives in. The work has been progressing very well. Here are few snapshots of the work in progress.

What you can do:

We, the Ankur International team, are seeking very little donations from you. Instead of big donation from few, we believe small donations from many will work better. We plan to work on one family at a time. Please think of small sustainable donation or a one time lump sum (whichever works better). Please do not take this otherwise. It is not possible for all to participate in all causes. We are trying to reach as many we can and create a donor base for this type of cause. Please try to connect with people who you think may come forward to help our fallen heroes of 1971 who were forgotten and neglected by our nation.
