Kalam Dadi (Pen Grandma)

Current Status(June 2010): IDLE  (Dhaka local contact failed to locate her)

Brief Background of Kolom Dadi:
Kalam (pen) Dadi (grandma) is the name she is carrying now in Dhaka University Campus forgetting her real name, Nasera Begum. Originally from Natore district, she finished her Masters in Bangla literature from Rajshahi University in 1969 with Honors from the same institution and started her career as  school teacher in a high school. She was married  to Mr. Chan Mia, a bank manager of then Habib Bank. On 5th April of 1971, Mr. Chan Mia never returned to his wife after being abducted by the liberation opposition forces. She did not have children and she did not marry again. She was passing her time with the students as her own children.

But that did not last long. She started serving as the Head Mistress of Khulna Memorial High School in 1983. In 1985 she had to give up her job due to failure of ‘right valve of her heart’. In 1987 she came to Dhaka for better treatment and started a job in a kindergarten. She also started a homeopath medicine corner. But eventually she lost all her deposits  to this  disease. She finally got admitted to Heart Foundation. Bad luck never let her alone. A incorrect procedure made her situation even worse.

Now she is struggling to survive by selling pens to the students of University and college campuses of Dhaka. 71 year old Kolom Dadi started her mobile pen store business by selling in campuses of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Eden College. Doctor advised her to take rest which she needed badly for her survival but she couldn’t afford the luxary since she needed to earn her living by selling these pens.
