When my mother moved us girls from California to Seattle back in 1964 we stayed with her sister Aunt Terry and Uncle Bob and their family while we found a place to live. In 1973 we got to stay with them for a couple of weeks when mom had back surgery. When mom died in 1979 Aunt Terry was just out of the hospital herself with breast cancer.

It was a fortunate coincidence to be at the same hospital as Aunt Terry was because Tom was in the ER and when he went for a test Sarah and I went to the cafeteria and Sarah said to me “isn’t the second man in line someone we know?” I looked up and sure enough there is Steve and Uncle Bob in front. I went over to say hello and they followed me to our table. I then found out that Aunt Terry is also in the ER. Bob went home with Jewel and we followed Steve to Aunt Terry’s room. I was so glad to be able to say hello and have great visit with her, Colleen and with Michelle. We laughed and enjoyed each other’s company.

When we said goodnight and Steve went with me to see Tom; he pretended to be a doctor while Tom had his eyes closed. I went back with Steve, but I did not see her since she was being looked after. I told them I hoped to see them tomorrow, so I would see them later.

The next day there was a break in visiting Tom so I left to say hi to Aunt Terry. On the way there to intensive care I heard Steve say “HEY!!!”

I looked and I said I was going to say hi to Aunt Terry and he told me she had died 10 minutes before.

I feel very lucky to have had enjoyed the visit we shared the night before. I was not real close to her but whenever we talked it was always light and happy, much as it was that night.

Even when a person knows that their loved one will pass soon and they think they have accepted it; when it does happen there is such a feeling of sadness in its finality.

May all those who had her close to their hearts find peace in their memories of her.

Love to you all

Robin

Her Catholic faith was her foundation and comfort through her entire life.
