They came to England in the days of Egbert or Alfred and settled along the east coast on land won by force of arms. They were farmers and herdsmen and were known to their native neighbors as "Herds-Danes," which by evolution produced Herendeed and Harrington. Their villages were called Herendeedton and Harrington. They were among the earliest settlers of New England, one having settled in Providence, R.I. as early as 1617 (?).

CHARLES HARRINGTON
AGNES HILL, his wife.
Lineage not determined
Charles Harrington of Chatham, N.C., b. about 1720 and d. before 1790; m. in Fayette Dist., N.C., 1747, Agnes Hill who was born about 1730. She was the daughter of Robert Hill and wife, Tabitha. Her father names her in his will.
Additional information and corrections on this family were received in an e-mail from Jackie Wood. She provides information refuting the assertion below that Charles was a Tory.
It is said that he drew a pension from the Royalist government so he must have been a Tory. His wife, Agnes, was an American patriot, having been accused and prosecuted by the Royalist Government for giving shelter to spies, called "loose characters." A true bill of indictment was found against her and signed by Robert Rutherford, which, it is to be noted, was the name of the second husband of Fanny, the wife of their eldest son, John. Agnes, then a widow, was shown in the Federal census of 1790 as then residing at her old home in Hillsboro Dist., Chatham Co., N.C., with no family but with five slaves.
Charles was one of three Harrington men, (the other two being Thomas &. wife, Hannah, and Whitmel of wife, Jane Shaw), whose marriages were recorded in the early part of the 18th century, (1735-1747) in the same locality on both sides of the state line between North Carolina and South Carolina, in Fayetteville Dist., North Carolina and in Prince Frederick Parish, S.C. The name Whitmel occurs in at least two generations of the Harringtons of this region. It seems probable that these three Harrington men were brothers and that their mother was a Whitmel. There was a Thomas Whitmel, Esq. (1668-1734) who married Elizabeth Hunter Bryan, (1694-1753) who had moved to Bertie Co., N.C., from Surrey Co., Va., with her parents in 1713. This Thomas Whitmel may have had a sister who married _________ Harrington, the supposed father of the three Harrington men whose marriages are listed.
FAMILY
John, b. before 1743, p. in Hillsboro Dist., Chatham Co., N.C. and died in 1792. he married in Fayette Dist., Union Co., S.C. in 1774 Frances, (Fanny) Bust, who after his death married 2nd, Rutherford. John moved with his family to Union Co., S.C. in 1779 and still resided there at census of 1790 with seven children in the family, including one boy aged over sixteen years; and with five slaves.
A land grant was made to him in 1749, naming him as eldest son of Charles Harrington and Agnes Hill, his wife. As oldest brother, he had placed of record of Power of Attorney for the purpose of settlement of his father's estate with his brother, Philiman.
In the wills of both John and his wife, Fanny Bust, there was mention of Jeptha Harrington, probably John's nephew; his brother, Drury and Drury's wife and he also mentioned "my children" but he did not indicate their names.
Charles, Jr., b. 1748; m. Patience Bragdale.
Drury, b. Chatham Co., N.C., June 15, 1751; m. 1774 Rachel Petty who was born 1755 and died 1823. Drury died in Chambers Co., Ala., Nov. 9, 1839.
