Whitmel Harrington, b. before 1721; d. before 1747; m. in Prince Frederick Parish, S.C. in 1742, who after his death married 2nd in 1747-48 William Wilson.Whitmel was one of the three Harrington men whose marriages were recorded in the early part of the 18th century (1735 to 1747), in the same locality on both sides of the State line between North Carolina and South Carolina, in Fayettesville Dist., N.C. and in Prince Frederick Parish, S.C. The name Whitmel occurs in at least two generations of the Harringtons of that region. It seems probable that these three Harrington men (Whitmel, Thomas of wife Hannah, and Charles of wife Agnes Hill) were brothers and that their mother was a Whitmel. There was one Thomas Whitmel Esq. (1688-1734) who married Elizabeth Hunter Bryan (1694-1753), who had moved to Bertie Co., N.C. from Surry Co., Va. along with his parents in 1713. It is thought that this Thomas Whitmel may have had a sister who married ______ Harrington, the father of the three Harrington men whose marriage records are listed. (Father)

ORAL TRADITION WITH OLD BIBLE:

"William was sailor under King George II, and deserted British Navy in Rhode Island by swimming ashore at night, because he had been required to stoop while fellow sailor was strapped on his back and flogged by officers."

In Feb. 1762 he served in Indian Wars under Lord Amhurst, and was a 2nd Lieutenant.

After one son, Israel, had enlisted for service in Rev. War, and after several of the older sons were married, William and Ann, with the rest of the children, who were not married, moved to Easton, N.Y., and settled on a farm on the east side of the Hudson River about 5 miles below Schuylersville, where a grandson, Horace Harrington, died not long after 1850.

The census of 1774 shows him residing in Gloucester, R.I. at head of family. In 1790 he is shown at head of family in Easton, N.Y. He was admitted freeman in Gloucester, R.I. in 1784.

FAMILY

William, b. p. in Rhode Island, Feb. 22, 1745; d. p. Luzerne, N.Y., May 14, 1820; p. married at Gloucester, R.I. at residing of Israel Brown, (Mrs. Brown was a Harrington, related to William), Sept. 12, 1766, Comfort Combs, Jamestown, N.Y., Dec. 10, 1845. She was a Revolutionary pensioner June 1, 1840, and resided with Andrew Irish, a son-in-law, at Hanover Chautauqua County, N.Y.

He lived in Douglas, Mass., in 1775, and then at Montague, Mass. and may be same who served in Rev. War as private in Brie's Co., Van Rensellaer's Reg. Albany Co. Militia. He may have served as gunner in Capt. Wm. Todd's 8th Co., Col. Thos. Croft's ARtillery Reg. from Feb. 1, 1776 to discharge May 8, 1776. He was p. a private in Lieut. John Kilburn's Co., Col. Simond's Berkshire Co., Reg. from Oct. 14, 1780 to Oct. 16, 1780, and marched to Vermont on alarm.

Simeon Harrington of Burrilsville, N.Y. said that he was distantly related to William of wife, Comfort Combs. He says that William belonged in Smithfield, R.I., in that part of Goucester now called Burrillsville, and in Douglas, Mass., across the line. Both Wm. and Comfort lived near him before and after marriage. Wm worked for Simeon's father; Stephen Eddy, a neighbor at Douglas, Mass., was witness to pension application. They resided at Gloucester, R.I., 2 years, Douglas, Mass., 2 years, Gloucester again, East Hoosick, Stephentown, Little Hoosick, Easton, Stillwater, and then Luzerne, N.Y., where they stayed 20 years, until he died. He is p. same who, tradition says, built hotel on Stateline of Mass., and N.Y. and who was uncle of Charles who married Martha Whipple.

Comfort said that they had 3 children at opening of War, and five at close. At the census of 1774, he was in Gloucester, R.I. with family of 4 (or 9). He may have been in Stephentown, N.Y. in 1790, at 1st Fed. Census, with family of 5.

Hudson Falls Deed Records show that on Aug. 24, 1827, a William received land from Amos in Washington Co., N.Y. Also on Sept. 13, 1827, he received land in Washington Co., from Ebenezer, from Paulina from Peleg, and from Catherine.

Mary, b. p. in R.I., ____ 12, 1749, (or 1747).

Ezekiel, b. p. in R.I., p. Mar. 6, 1747 (or 1755) p. married in Douglas, Mass., Apr. 10, 1784, (or 1787), Trail Darling, of Douglas. They resided in Easton, N.Y. on east side of Hudson River, below Schuylersville, and reared a family, including Horace.

He received bounties from Town of Canterbury, p. Conn.), before 1780, for service in Rev. War. He enlisted from Canterbury for 3 years of duration of the War, in Capt. Batt's Co., Col. Durkee's 21st Reg. of Conn. Militia.

Town Rcds. of Chepachet, R.I., and land rcds. of Gloucester, R.I. show him as of Gloucester, R.I,. and Smithfield, R.I. in 1773. He may have been in Rensselaersville, N.Y. with familyh of 1 man, 3 boys, 3 girls, in 1790.

Hope, b. p. in R.I. ___ 26, 1751.

Israel of Easton, N.Y., Apr. 28, 1812; d. and Johnsburg, N.Y., b. p. in R.I., June 12, 1754; m. in Smithfield (or Gloucester) R.I., Mar. 6, 1772, Thodea Mann of Smithfield. She was born Nov. 19, 1759 and d. p. in Easton, N.Y., Nov. 16, 1844. After Israel's death she married Ebenezer Shelley. She applied for pension as Rhoda Mann Shelley, and says, "..moved from R.I. to N. Adams, Mass. about 1780, resided there about 3 years, then moved to Easton, N.Y." Israel's brother, Silas, moved with them to Mass., and later to N.Y. State.

At the census of 1774 they were in Gloucester (or Chepachet) R.I., and there were 3 in the family. In 1790 at the time of the first Fed. Census, he was in Easton, N.Y. at head of family of 1 man, 3 boys, and 2 girls. Among their children was Charles who married Martha Whipple.

Israel served in Rev. War, was a sargeant and enlisted at Smithfield, R.I. in 1775. He was at the Battle of Lexington.

Emily, b. p. in R.I., p. Jan 20, 1758.

Ebenezer of Kingsbury, N.Y., b. in Exeter, R.I., 1752; married Paulina Burnham. At the first Fed. Census he resided in Kingsbury, N.Y. and was head of family of 1 boy over 16, 2 boys under 16, and 5 girls. He resided on knoll between Vaughn's Corners and Nigger Sign Board.

He was Elder of Baptist Church and officiated as Moderator of First Baptist Church of Warrensburg, N.Y. on occasion of its organization at house of Simeon Fuller, in Bolton, now Caldwell Parish, Warren Co., N.Y., Dec. 26, 1807.

He served in Rev. War in N.Y. State as private in Capt. Shepard's Co., Hathorn's Reg. with Anthony and James Harrington.

Hudson Falls Deed Records show that he purchased land in Town of Kingsbury, N.Y. from John Floyd and wife, joining lands of Wm. Vaughn and Atwood Mattison, Sept. 14, 1824. He sold land at Vaughn's Corners, N.Y. to Isaiah Pasco under dates July 11, 1826, and July 13, 1826. Paulina conveyed land in Washington County to Isiah Pacco July 13, 1826. Ebenezer and wife, Paulina, sold to Wm. Mattison, Oct. 30, 1826, 3-3/4 acres. They sold Dec. 5, 1828 to Russell Vaughn 1/4 acre where Asa Harrington formerly lived, by Atwood Mattison et al. Also on Jan. 13, 1829, they conveyed land in Washington Co. to Russell Vaughn.

See additional information provided by Peggy Hoffmann, a descendant of Ebenezer. Her additional information refutes the assertion that he was married to Paulina Burnham, but rather to Paulina Doolin. There is confusion on the web regarding this and hopefully this information will help to clarify the various Ebenezers.

John, of Easton, N.y. and Danby, Vt., b. in Watson, N.Y., Sept. 15, 1762, and will probated Apr. 18, 1823; m. Sarel Frudman in 1778. In his will, filed at Salem, Washington Co., N.Y. are named six children. He conveyed land will will to son, Amos, lands in town of Easton, N.Y., on east side of Hudson River from Schuylersville, and wihch Amos and his brother, Peleg, sold to Richard and Wm. Harrington on Aug. 19, 1827.

He is spoken of in the History of Danby, Vt., as an early settler from Easton, N.Y., where he often went to visit. On his first visit he died on the way home. In 1800 he p. first appeared as freeman of Danby, and in 1790 head of family of 1 man, 2 boys, under 16 and 2 females. Or he may have been in Easton, N.Y. that year, head of family of 1 man, one boy, and 3 girls.

Richard, of Easton, and Greenwich, N.Y., b. in Easton, N.Y. of in R.I. p. May 21, 1765; d. in Easton, Dec. 24, 1835; m. Mar. 1788, Mary Allen who was born 1763, and d. in Easton, Dec. 9, 1863, aged 100 yrs. She came on horseback with girl friend from Connecticut, where she lived 40 miles from Bunker Hill, whose cannons she heard. The girl friend returned to Conn. along. Richard and May had children, among whom were Richard, who married Deborah Milks, and William who married Sally Narcoss. The first Fed. Census of 1790 shows them at Easton, N.Y., with familyh of 1 man, 1 boy, and 1 girl. At the census of 1800 they were there with 2 children under 10 and 1 under 16, both he and his wife being 26, to 45 years old.

When he was an old man he owned no land, but resided with his second son, Richard. He died suddenly while after a bucket of water. He was a brother, p. John, in Danby, Vt. His wife, Mary said, "Richard was brother of Israel." His old Bible is in possession of his great-grandson, John J. Harrington, of Greenwich, N.Y. It seems to show lineage as follows:

William, b. 1717, deserted from British Navy in R.I., had a son, Silas, b. in R.I., and who had son, Richard, who married Mary Allen, and had a son, Truman, who married Wealthy, and had a son, Richard, who married in Greenwich, N.Y., and had a son, John J., who is section foreman at Greenwich, N.Y.

He applied for a state patent on 323 acres of land out of Lot 16 of Saratoga Patent; same land was patented to John R. Bleeker, Dec. 27, 1796. Richard and Abraham Inman sold land in Town of Easton, N.Y. to Chas. Harrington, Feb. 12, 1798. He also conveyed land in Washington Co. N.Y. to Chas. Harrington, Apr. 13, 1807. On Mar. 17, 1827, he and wife, Mary Allen sold land in Easton to their two sons, Richard and Wm. On Dec. 21, 1827, he conveyed land in Washington Co., N.Y. to Richard, Jr.

Silas, b. Smithfield, R.I., p. May 18, 1767; d. in R.I. He was the brother of Israel and moved with Israel from R.I. to Mass. and then to N.Y. State. He was in Easton, N.Y. at census of 1790 with family of seven, but moved to Dorsett, Vt., where he had a family of 11 at census of 1800. He afterward moved to Johnsburg, N.Y. where he resided when the widow of his brother, Israel, applied for pension. He was in Johnsburg at census of 1820, with 2 boys in family, 1 boy being over 15 and 1 over 20. He was also there at census of 1830. Zail G. Harrington came to Johnsburg from Dorsett, Vt., with his mother, Abigail, to reside with his uncle, Silas.

He was first settler in Shingle Hollow, then called Nepmore Vale, before 1800. He is said to have been living in Johnsburg at birth of his son, Silas, about 1785.

The following is an excerpt from a letter from Hubert Bowen, one of the descendants:

"In about July, 1830, they (Cynthia and Elias Bowen), joined the other new church of Jesus Christ, of Latter Day Saints, it being organized 3 months before. A missionary of that church came to the house of Elias' father, James Bowen and wife, Rhoda, and through prayer, restored the sight of Elias' younger brother, born blind and then more than nine years old.

They, Elias and Cynthia, left Vermont, and went west with the Church to Kirtland, Ohio; then to Nauvoo, Illinois, then they started to walk with their young family, their eldest son, Potter then 16 years old and 4 other younger children, about 1600 miles to Utah. When about two days out on the plains from St. Joe, Mo., Elias died, leaving her to come on alone, that is, with the children, in the company of many other Mormons, in that remarkable exodus.

Some years later, on July 9, and 10, 1872, Cynthia (Harrington) Bowen, traveled about 80 miles to Salt Lake City, Utah, and took with her her son, Potter, and went to the Mormon Temple there and made a record of herself and who she was and performed baptism ceremonies for many of her dead relatives. She said she was the daughter of Wm. and Elizabeth Hawley, and the grand-daughter of Paul and Thankful Webster."
